I loved this book. Schrefer mixes manipulation, truth and lies to show how they can create desire, both concious and unconcious, wanted and unwanted. I only hope his first novel, which I will read is as good as this one.

What does desire look like if you don't know what you desire? The New Kid explores this idea through teenage outsider Humphrey and his actress drifter sister Gretchen. None of the characters in the book know what they want (and I mean NONE of them), yet all of them act on desires that they think they should have, or maybe do have, or somehow partly have. A book about unsexy sex.

Whoa! This book went places that I sorta expected but then I was like whoa. The book consists of three segments. The first segment deals with a boy named Humprey and his move to a small Florida town. The second segment deals with Humphrey's half sister Gretchen and her relationship with her new boyfriend and his parents. The last segment deals with the reunion of Humphrey and Gretchen and their strange bond. I don't know how to describe this book. Just read it and make your own judgement.
