DNF at pg 435 out of 537.
This was just ok. The beautiful world, descriptions, and lore were unfortunately surrounded by a plot that wasn't interesting to me and characters that weren't compelling. Nearly all of the main characters had the same tone of voice, and none of them stood out to me. The most exciting part of the novel happens after page 350, which wasn't truly that exciting, that's just when the book felt like it finally began. There also weren't any memorable or meaningful women in this book, which made the story feel flat and underdeveloped. I couldn't make myself read the last 100 pages when I asked myself if I truly cared enough to know what happens to Locke. Soft DNF, may return at a later time.

DNF. based on the summary of this book I thought it would have been a home run hit. however I could not get over that I didn't understand anything about the setting or why it existed in this way for me to enjoy the plot line of thievery and gentlemanly conning. the shark dancers? what is this place and why does it exist? why am I reading random excerpts describing it to me but then the plot line I'm into could have easily been placed in the real world? I kept trying to read into if it would all be made clear in the end so it was worth the battle to keep going, but I couldn't and so therefore I didn't.
I liked it, not one of my favourites. I kept getting stuck and having to encourage myself to get back into it. I can't put my finger on what it was. There's plenty of character development, but maybe a bit too much detail with the world building and place setting. Which is definitely a personal preference thing. Beware the story moves around a lot and jumps between timelines, so make sure you have paitence for that.

I never felt like I met the characters, and I never felt introduced to the world even remotely. The writing style, while tolerable on its own, is far too wordy to excuse the book feeling so blank after 200 pages. I am disappointed, because I was very intrigued by everything I heard about this book. I’ll likely return to it in the future.
