I thought this wasn't going to hit me that hard since the whole premise of it is people dying/killing each other, but damn. Take my heart and stomp all over it, why don't you?

Fast-paced, action-packed, and surprisingly thought-provoking. I was really impressed by how well the author could distinguish a cast of characters that was numerous and on the surface, pretty similar - 40+ ninth-graders from the same class. But he was able to get you to care about many of them in just a few paragraphs, and each of them had at least a few pages of story.
The action scenes were well described and there were some very anime-like fight scenes between some of the characters, which were fun to read. There was plenty of violence but I thought the way the author depicted the dystopian / fascist government from the perspective of the students within the battle was really well done - as a reader you learned a lot about the world the author has set this story in without it being explicitly told to you.
I think there were some parts that were a little bit sentimental - not that that's a bad thing, but just that the characters seemed more like characters rather than real people during those scenes.
The edition I read had an author's note at the end which I really liked - lots of insight about how the story came to be and why certain details were included or not included in the story.
