the writing was painful. characters were underdeveloped. ironically i don’t think im the target audience
I Wish You All the Best is my first foray into nonbinary characters. It is the story of Ben De Backer, who comes out to their parents as nonbinary then gets kicked out of the house and forced to live with their estranged sister. What subsequently follows is Ben exploring their nonbinary identity, their struggles with anxiety and depression, and their feelings for their classmate Nathan.
There are so many gender biases we as humans tend to have that alienate gender nonconforming individuals, and through Mason Deaver's eyes, who they themselves are nonbinary, we see these glaring biases. Do I shop in the men's or women's section at a clothing store? Should I constantly correct people when they use the wrong pronouns? Are people going to judge me or see me differently if I tell them my gender identity? It's a constant struggle, with many nonbinary people like Ben suffering from mental illness. Even the most well-meaning of individuals can make this struggle even more difficult for nonbinary individuals. For example, just writing this review after listening to this book, even after reading this book, I needed to correct the pronouns I used multiple times.
It was a very moving and powerful book with a beautiful ending, but I did find at times that the dialogue got a little dull. It wasn't a long book, but it did drag at certain points.
Despite the dialogue being a bit boring at times, I would highly recommend this book for anyone who hasn't been exposed to nonbinary gender identity so they can get a better understand of what these individuals go through.

This book was super cute, and a really fun read. I did have some issues with the writing, but other than that I really enjoyed it. It has great representation, with a bi nb main character, and pan, bi, nb, Korean American, and African American side characters, and also deals with topics such as anxiety, queer labels, usage of the word queer, Mariam wearing a hijab as an enby person, and more. The plot moved a little fast for me, with little time to develop scenes or characters, especially at the climax, and that did lower my opinion of this book, but it was overall a good book, and very important.
