I listened to the audiobook all in one day, I couldn't put it down!!
Ben's story is very similar to mine. Not realizing how abusive your parents are, isolation, getting estranged from said parents, and forming a new life through the support of family, friends, and therapy. I might recommend this book to some friends who've had a difficult time understanding how such horrible parents can mess with your head.
And I'm also very impressed and grateful with how non-binary-ness can feel and be handled.

This book was very sweet, and such an important read. Most queer books I've read deal with sexual identity and orientation, so it was a breath of fresh air to read an own-voices novel about gender identity. I also thought this book took a realistic approach to anxiety and depression, particularly in the slow build-up of trust between therapist and patient, and the way that Ben deals with insomnia and having trouble keeping track of how much time is really passing when they're feeling especially bad.
Aside from the therapy sessions and difficulties with mental illness, one of the standout aspects of the novel was its side characters. I found myself wanting to know more about the friends Ben makes at their new school, as well as their sister and her husband.
Ultimately, I thought the romance was a bit dry, but that the other "coming of age" aspects of this were done well.

This was okay. It was honestly darker than I was expecting. I think I would’ve liked it more if I had just a bit more to the story. I wanted to see Ben navigating life a bit more if that makes sense. They immediately fit in at their new school and it seemed unrealistic. I just wanted a bit more.

I don't usually write reviews, but for this book, I had too. As an nb youth, I saw myself a lot in Ben, dealing with anxiety and depression, dealing with self-doubt when it comes to your art, and dealing with when, where, and how to come out. I've had a rough few days, but this book helped me get lost and feel like I had someone real sharing their story to me, as if saying, "I've learned, it'll get better."
Thank you so much for this book. It really helped me feel just a little bit braver, with every silly remark Nathan said, or sarcastic eye roll that Ben gave, or emotional scene about misgendering someone you care about. This book was beautiful.
