Only Ottessa Moshfegh could make a mystery out of monotony.

Death in Her Hands follows a widowed woman who, upon finding a note about a dead body with no body in sight, becomes obsessed with a murder mystery mostly of her own creation.

Much of the novel takes place within the Vesta’s mind. The few sentences left behind on the note take Vesta through a whirlwind of speculation. Yet, when Vesta starts to find confirmation of her guesses in the world around her, it becomes unclear whether she is only speculating or if there is really something sinister afoot in her small town.

Like most of her work, Death in Her Hands is a subversion of our expectations. It may or may not satisfy you.

I wasn’t particularly invested in all the details, but I understood the underlying storyline of a person spinning a story in their mind when their life is comparatively uninteresting, or not the way they hoped. It is interesting where she gets her inspiration and how that seems to manifest in her “real world”.
