This series is so much fun! If you can get a hold of it, listen to the audiobooks, it is a completely different experience to hear the full cast with sound effects and music. The voice actors do a wonderful job imitating the voices of the actors from the films.

There’s just as much to love in this installment of the Star Wars series reinterpreted as Shakespeare plays.
This is the last of the original trilogy (and I must admit, I’m a bit of purist and love the original movies and harbor less love for the prequels and later sequels), so we’ll see how the prequel interpretations go. I’m less familiar with the plots and everything not having watched them a million times, unlike the original trilogy, so I’m curious to learn how it affects my comprehension or enjoyment. Except of course the classic memes and jokes that have arisen, like “Now THIS is podracing!” or “I don’t like sand …. It’s rough, and course, and it gets everywhere.”
Anyway, this is great! I love this mix of high and low brow culture and I love how much Ian Doescher paid so much attention to everything.

I really enjoyed reading this interesting trilogy! It makes me want to delve more deeply into the worlds of Shakespeare and Star Wars. :)

It's that time of year. Your students are done. They can smell summer and freedom and if you don't do something fun with them these last four weeks, you'll lose them entirely.
Here it is. Guaranteed to capture even the most reluctant reader. William Shakespeare's Star Wars.
This is the third set of Readers Theater classroom reading pages I'm offering teachers. You need to purchase class copies of the book for students to use as the script and have a version of the movie ready for students to watch (iTunes, DVD, whatever works for you).
Quirk Books offers an Educator's Guide, as well, in which author Ian Doescher explains the many references to different Shakespeare plays, which you may choose to teach - or not.
If you haven't taught this unit with one of Doescher's books before, you may need to introduce imabic pentameter. Use the supporting lesson materials, including the Two-Line Start Cards, from my previous post: Using Star Wars to introduce iambic pentameter.
If, however, your students read Verily and Empire at the end of grading periods 1, 2 or 3, you can launch right into Jedi and use it as a wrap-up of the school year!

I really enjoyed this! It's not just the script of Return of the Jedi with a few thee's and thou's thrown in ... the author did a fantastic job of really adapting the familiar movie storyline and dialogue into something truly Shakespearian. I especially appreciated the extended soliloquies that a number of the characters had, the better to explain their motivations and true feelings. A quick but fun read.
