It was a well written book, but reminded me why I don't usually stray too far from romance. So much rape. War is ugly indeed, maybe I'll just read about it in the news rather than rehashing past horrors.

Balancing flowery prose and straightforwardness, Half of a Yellow Sun is a book you cannot stop reading once you start. The characters were fleshed out fully and their complicated relationships with each other in the first half was very engaging, as though you were in the very room as them. The first part felt polished and languid, so once the war broke out and messed with the pacing, it was a bit jarring. However, it was a great tool by the author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, to make the readers fully immerse themselves in the situations. I also really appreciate the use of food as a means to give more backgrounds to the characters and their personalities, as well as a way to tell the passage of time and the shift in environment.
