I am the true idiot for deciding to read this book. I knew what I was getting myself into, I knew it would take me forever to read and would likely be tedious. But, unlike Crime and Punishment, this read was not worth it. At least for me. Maybe if I had read it in another time it would have been different, but I did not have a good reading experience 90% of the time with this book. I committed to it, I decided I had to finish it, but in the month it took to read this I was only reading the book half the time because it was so tedious and uninteresting. Again, I knew it would probably be like this and I started anyway, but yikes. I was hoping the ending would at least be satisfying. It wasn’t. I can see the point of it, I didn’t like it.
I did like the murder of Nastasya Fillipovna, that was nice. More murder would have made the book far better. Dostoevsky is really good at writing murder.
Hopefully, in the unlikely scenario that I read this book again, it will be a better experience. For now I am simply happy to finally be done with it. Also, as a final note, I think Yevgeny Pavlovitch was exactly right in saying that Myshkin never truly loved Aglaia or Nastasya.

This was an amazing journey. Dostoevsky just writes people and conversations so realistically that I caught myself recognizing certain people in characters in the book. Myshkin at that is a wonderful character and although innocent and guillible, more complex than many others were let to believe. That he is considered an idiot just shows how rotten by greed and self absorbency society is. In conclusion just a fantastic showcase of love, obsession, society and so much more.

I never read a book, where I was caught that much by characters and dialogues. Although it lays back more than a century from now, it is more than worth reading.

it's not that this wasn't worth the read, it's just that a month after carrying it around, i'd read half of it, and part one had the same plot as part 2. that is, subsets of characters hanging out in parlors, talking. and here, fighting. as i started part 3, i made a bet with myself that i could predict the remaining 350 pages.

but it's a compelling story, with some beautiful and anxious characters, so i'll definitely finish it -- and give it a proper review -- someday.
