man cannot live on vibes alone. while I loved the overall theme and story line I found the fantasy side of things really weak. reading things about a fictional place and religions but having such specific details about real-world versions of those things felt slapdash. I was down for a retelling/storyline of xenophobia but when it was So Obvious (pope, shabbos, mass, (the)mary, rosary, etc etc) it felt like the story was written as a historical fantasy but names had to be changed for copywrite. In this case, there was no need... It would have been a four or even five-star review from me had Allison Saft just leaned into the gothic magical New England. I also wished Margaret grappled with her mother's treatment of her a bit more it seemed rushed. Oh well. it is YA after all so I will forgive the "safe sex" talk in it. TLDR: too many details that suspended my disbelief and pulled me out.

Doesn’t say what time period it’s in, I got this far and they’re just starting the process for the hunt. It just wasn’t for me I’m afraid.

First I want to say that Allison Saft is one of my favorite authors & I’ve only read 2 of her books, that’s including this one!
Her writing is just the right amount of descriptive & it’s so easy for me to feel like I’m part of the story and it’s so easy to watch it play out in your head.
The book was great & love how she incorporates real world conflicts in her stories and it truly makes you feel and put yourself in the character shoes.
The story line was paced very well, at first I was a little nervous that the ending was going to be rushed because I reached 90% & the characters were barely going to start the “hunt” but to my surprised the last 3 chapters are written so well that you’re not saying “that’s it?”
Both main MCs have a good character development specially Margaret.
Over all I do recommend this book (:

I don’t this book was for me. I was expecting far more magic since it was a headline review on another book which was really powerfully lead by magic. I think younger audiences might vibe with this one more than older audiences, and that’s okay. Just something to be aware of!
