A bit of a letdown after Mr. Mercedes, but King is still a master of fleshing out complex and flawed characters and the ethos that drive them.

The follow up to Mr. Mercedes which I rated 5 stars is probably equal if not better than the first yet I hold back a star and the reason seems to be that Finders Keepers didn't hit me quite as hard as the first book. Finders Keepers is as fast moving and actually more complex but perhaps my expectations were too high. As a 2 book set I would give that a solid 4 1/2 so maybe just my mood when I read it. Anyway, 4 stars is a heck of a rating anyway. I'll say this: If you liked the first book by all means read this one or it can be read as a stand alone novel and you'd lose little. The strong characters King developed in the 1st book don't appear until the second part of this novel. I definitely recommend it to not only King fans but for anyone who likes fast moving mysteries with plenty of suspense. However if you like the fantasy type and Kings old horror style you might be let down a bit. One of my strong reasons for liking this one is like it's predecessor, the horror is horror in everyday lives which to me is ever more frightening. This is a story that could happen. The more I write about it, the more I like it so if I could give half stars I'd probably rate both 4 1/2 stars each. Fast moving, good plot and characters I hope to see more of in the future. The three "heroes" who appear in both novels are among my favorite character in any type fiction - period.

Well, that was a solid sequel. Characters from Mr. Mercedes — namely Bill Hodges, Holly Gibney, and Jerome Robinson — reappear but not until King takes the first third or so to set up the current predicament.

In the 1970s, the once avid fan Morris Bellamy of famed author John Rothstein has soured on this master of letters for what he perceives Rothstein to have done to his literary hero in the final installment of the Jimmy Gold trilogy— at least that’s what the world is meant to believe, that it’s only a trilogy. Skip ahead to 2014 and Bellamy has since committed many a crime and received much punishment. Now in our current timeline, a 13yo Pete Saubers, whose father was injured in the Mr. Mercedes massacre of the first novel and whose family, thus, had to relocate to Bellamy’s childhood home unbeknownst to them, of course, comes across a treasure belonging to our villain Bellamy, which the latter desperately wants back. (Please pardon all the commas in that last sentence; I think they all work as intended🙃)

Finders Keepers is much less perverse than Mr. Mercedes and contains more elements of a gritty, violent crime novel. I dug it. And no surprise, but I yet again appreciate how King has created yet another male character who unjustly holds everyone but himself, particularly women, responsible for his problems and resulting horrific actions, something I personally think he did best through Jack Torrance in The Shining. Speaking of, we don’t have any supernatural elements in this sequel just as we didn’t in the first, but that last chapter might be setting up a little something unnatural/unworldly/paranormal for the final book in this trilogy, End of Watch. Let’s go👻
