“Shit don’t mean shit.”
Stephen King
Finders Keepers

Retired detective Bill Hodges is now a repo man, Holly works for him, Jerome is in college.
There’s a crazy man with a deadly obsession for a writer, and an unfortunate teenager that crosses his path. That shit does mean something

The draw for me in Mr. Mercedes was Mr. Mercedes. This book is good but I won’t lie I wasn’t nearly as sold on the plot.
This felt smaller, simpler and to me it fell like Hodges just happened to be in the vicinity. A little disappointed 😔

Mr. King is still the king 🤴🏽 . His prose is perfect, his writing style familiar and welcoming. Still enjoyed the book, but it should have been its own story

2.5

Some nice stuff about writing and obsession, but too much set up, too much Morris Bellamy and not nearly enough Jerome. I did enjoy the promise of the ominous clacks, though.

Oh, ...and thank you sincerely, Mr. King for, once again,

Ummm!

I almost gave up on this series after the first book was good but uninspiring - completionism scores a victory, this book is awesome. For one, the premise is just better. "What if there was a racist serial killer with mommy issues" just does not hit the same as "what if a crazy murderer REALLY loved a book". I'm not joking, that's so much more interesting.

Second, Stephen King remembered that he is the Mayor of Bonkersville! Balance is restored in the universe and I'm very excited for the third book (but not enough to shoot anyone over, important to call out.)

The second book in Stephen King's Bill Hodges Trilogy was just as intriguing and well-written as the first one, Mr. Mercedes. It had great characters, both returning and new, and the story really revolved around these characters and their decisions, especially Pete's, the protagonist. I found Pete well-developed, especially in the way he sometimes mirrors the antagonist in his love for the Jimmy Gold books, and how Morris is almost him, just more desperate and a bit closer to the Cliffs of Insanity. Morris, the antagonist, was interesting, but not quite as evil as Brady, the villain in Mr. Mercedes. Morris is much more maniacal in his approach to problems, while Brady thought his decisions out more, but still ultimately paid the price, both with his mother and his final "predicament", although we realize that we are not done with him yet. I do have a few issues with this book however. First, it felt a bit as if Hodges and his "posse" were kind of an afterthought, that the author first came up with the idea involving Morris and Pete and John Rothstein, and then decided to throw in the "Finders Keepers" agency to make it a sequel. It almost felt as if there wasn't enough for Hodges and Co. to do. In the final 100 pages, there is a bit of a chase sequence, where Morris is at the bookstore, then Pete is there, and then Hodges gets there. Morris leaves, Pete goes after him, Hodges goes after him, and so on. It seemed unnecessary for Hodges to be there other than the final battle, because he was basically chasing around Pete and Morris the entire time. However, this was not too bad, as I enjoyed Pete incredibly. I felt like I wanted to get back to the Pete side of things when the perspective was focused on Hodges trying to find him. Other than this, I thoroughly enjoyed Finders Keepers. FYI, you don't need to have read Mr. Mercedes to read this installment, although it certainly helps with understanding parts about Brady, Hodges and Holly and Jerome, and little hints in the City Center scene where Pete's dad is run over by Brady. Anyways, overall I loved the book, it's a great thriller and page-turner, with fast-paced writing and intriguing characters. I recommend it.

Another different kind of Stephen King story and I really enjoyed it. I thought it was odd that Bill Hodges didn't show up till almost the midway point of the book, but it all worked out well in the end. The very ending was interesting and definitely had a bit of the old Stephen King touch to it.

I look forward to the third book in the Bill Hodges trilogy. It should be good.
