Another different kind of Stephen King story and I really enjoyed it. I thought it was odd that Bill Hodges didn't show up till almost the midway point of the book, but it all worked out well in the end. The very ending was interesting and definitely had a bit of the old Stephen King touch to it.

I look forward to the third book in the Bill Hodges trilogy. It should be good.

Bill Hodges is a side character in this story. It's really about Pete and Morris and their shared love of an old writer. It almost feels like it would be better if it was a standalone but the Hodges-Brady subplot doesn't have enough legs to be interesting alone, it would still be the subplot in whatever other story it was in and I'd have the same complaint. Still despite this it's still enjoyable.

5 Stars

I loved Mr Mercedes, don't get me wrong; but this is even better; which is almost unheard of with 2nd books in a series.

We initially are introduced to the killer and his cronies, and it all ramps up plateaus and ramps up some more. This is not high-octane, but definitely more suspenseful.

In some ways our author/book-obsessed killer, Morris Bellamy (Non-spoiler, we know the killer from the book blurb) reminds me of Annie from Misery. The obsessive lengths he goes to for the unpublished manuscripts come to a head at the end of the book. Awesome! (think Gollum and the Ring...LOL)

Anyway; Hodges deals with his own obsessions with Hardy and the destructive role he played in Hardy's life and countless others. Is Hardy mentally sick from this obsession?? Physically sick or a combination of both??

Desire, obsessions, want and need; all play a huge role in this novel. Everyone seems to have overwhelming desire for something. From Peter's want for a better life for his family; his sister wanting what others have, Morris' obsession with the unpublished novels; and Hodges desire for Hardy to make a move... any move.

I loved every inch of this book, and feel the pull of the Dark Tower maybe?? When you read the end; let me know. Is it DT or something else?? I can feel it!
