Weird, probably a better read if I had ever played Minecraft.

Initially only read this because of the bizarre combination of author and subject. Occasionally fun. Often boring and tedious. Seems great for a target audience of older kids / younger teens, and has some cool ideas but doesn't develop them very well.

Special mention to the audiobook read by Jack Black for using sound effects and music from the game, very nice touch.

Looking at the other reviews, it looks like most readers gave high ratings either out of sheer surprise that this book wasn't completely unreadable, or out of pure love for Minecraft and anything related to it. So if either of those is intriguing to you, I'd recommend it.

There was definitely a lot of this book that didn't speak to me, but still, for what it is, it's surprisingly okay.

Interesting read. Helped understand a little better what my kids are always talking about... Minecraft.

What if, one day, you wake up in the middle of the ocean and, upon swimming to the nearest land, discover that you are now in a world made entirely out of cubes? The Island tells just that story, as written down by the guy it happened to, to help those who come after him.

This book was an interesting mix of Robinson Crusoe and Jumanji but set in Minecraft, complete with all the mechanics and mobs of the video game. It is written in a very conversational style, and is packed with action.

Overall, I don’t think this book was much scarier than the video game is, but there are several passages you may want to check before your kid reads it, including several near death experiences and animal breeding.

This book would be a great read for anyone 10-13 who loves to play Minecraft or who loves a good adventure story!

Audiobook (libby)

Absolutely recommend listening to the audiobook, it was like the book was written for Jack Black. The music and sound effects also really added to the experience. I enjoyed it as an adult and this it would be especially great for middle graders. Looking forward to listening to "The Mountain" next.

Good
-great sense of discovery as you uncover how a video game works
-I only sort of played Minecraft (prefer other games) and the mechanics of the game described in the book seemed correct

Bad
-I think if I had read the book I would give a much different rating. This didn't seem to be Max Brooks greatest effort.
funny lighthearted
