HELL. YES. I just re-read the whole Kick-Ass series and finished by reading this book for the first time and I am so completely satisfied. I love these characters so much and I am so happy to have seen them done just the right way. This whole series was the frickin' bomb diggity.

Kick-Ass is 18 now and his Justice League of costumed self-proclaimed superheroes is well established, but are they ready to face the big time? Their one member/friend who had the balls and skills to fight big scary criminals is Hit-Girl and she’s locked away in prison, thanks to Chris Genovese, nephew of terrifying mafia boss Rocco Genovese. Now Chris is in hospital in critical condition while Uncle Rocco is intent on taking over all organised crime on the East Coast. Can Kick-Ass and co step it up to fight the new super mafia that’s forming? Or can they at least break Hit-Girl out of prison so she can lead the way?

The storyline was a little predictable but I was impressed by the characters here. The violence didn’t bother me like it did with the first Kick-Ass comic and Hit-Girl’s endless swearing is no longer shocking (for one thing because she’s a teenager now) but her character still is extremely shocking. There’s a sequence where she is speaking with a prison counsellor that is very well done and actually surprised me with where it went. Millar is plumbing some dark depths.

So. This was pretty (tho not especially) good, but wow, is that impressive after how bad its predecessor was. Worth reading if you read that and want the taste washed from your mouth.

A fitting conclusion that I decided to pick up from the library on a whim. Miller closes off Dave’s story really well and left me with a smile on my face. Violent as previous books but not as gratuitous, it’s a quick but solid read. Definitely read/watch the other two first.

Reading this the 4th volume of Kick-ass made me wonder if there are similarities to Duterte's Philippines. Violence between vigilantes, mobsters, and crooked cops provide cover for each others' vendettas, leading to all kinds of murders and massacres. Reading this book I just realized one of the things I find so disturbing about Hit-Girl is how dead-eyed she is while she scythes down all her enemies. Now for the spoilers. I also liked Kick-Ass's efforts to go back to being normal... though I wished he chose a career closer to Valerie's career at the end. Finally, when Dave was blowing off the superherodom to be with Valerie, how were either of them also holding down normie jobs? I'd been thinking I would not keep reading the series after vol. 4.... but now I'm reconsidering. I'm a sucker for a series.

Hats off to this series. I really enjoyed each installment. One of my favorite elements was easily the character development. I feel like serial comics can occasionally slip into character stagnancy, whereas Kick-Ass did not disappoint.
