Audiobook. An entertaining listen, I enjoyed it. I admit I wasn’t a huge JVN fan when Queer Eye came back, but he really grew on me. He doesn’t hold anything back in this memoir, which is refreshing. My biggest criticism is that gorgeous is used very liberally.
*I wanted to put more effort into this book review than others because this is a truly special book.
In this compelling book, the author's singular voice and engaging perspective shine forth as both unique and enlightening. From the early chapters, it becomes evident that this work is set apart from a plethora of memoirs and self-development tomes that populate the market. The author's impassioned focus on broadening reader comprehension and equipping them with practical tools for self-care, self-efficacy, and mental health awareness are notable highlights of this thought-provoking narrative.
What truly distinguishes this author's story is the measured and balanced recounting of his past. Rather than surrendering to the temptation of casting shadows over his childhood and adolescence or vilifying those who challenged him, he opts for an empathetic portrayal of both himself and his erstwhile antagonists. This approach ensures that the narrative does not become mired in negativity, but instead elevates the author and his loved ones as the true luminaries of his life's journey.
The book pulses with the author's consistent, heartfelt appreciation for the significant individuals who have graced his life. In a world where it's easy to overlook the worth of our support systems amidst the chaos of daily life, the author's unwavering recognition and celebration of his closest allies provide a refreshing perspective.
Of particular interest is the author's relentless pursuit of mastery in various fields. From cheerleading to hairstyling, and later as a media personality and a stellar comedic figure in the world of entertainment and figure skating, the author’s journey is nothing short of inspiring. His commitment to personal growth, resilience in the face of numerous setbacks, and dedication to nurturing self-love form a roadmap for readers seeking to hone their own skills and passions.
In conclusion, this book does more than just tell a story; it serves as an insightful guide, helping readers navigate their own journeys towards mastery and self-fulfillment. By placing the author's story as a beacon, it invites us all to learn, grow, and, above all, dream.

Anyone who knows me knows I love JVN! I loved this. A charming memoir about giving yourself permission be you, survival and trauma, accepting all aspects of you, and staying strong in the darkest times.
Vulnerability is always beautiful. This book definitely has that! Appreciated Van Ness’ intentionality in sharing about his challenges and victories. He uses his influence to spread messages of self-love and hope. Who doesn’t love a person and book that fire that?!
I really loved reading about his story. I think he did his best trying to write about some of the horrible things that happened throughout his life without getting really super dark. It being written in his voice still makes it lighter even when he was being serious. I really appreciate that he had a ton of organizations listed as resources in the back for those who may have been through similar situations.
My one minor criticism would be to maybe have used footnotes. They would have helped some when he was making side comments or little tangents. Otherwise, I believe it’s worth the read if you want to get to know him better.

Short and sweet. Not the best celebrity memoir I've ever read (or should I say, listened to), but still very entertaining nonetheless. I highly recommend listening to this in audiobook version - JvN reads the book himself, meaning that the story is incredibly thoughtfully, emotionally and energetically told. With this revealing memoir, van Ness opens up about his HIV-positive status, the sexual abuse he suffered as an adult, and his struggles with drug abuse and sex addiction. Some parts of him discussing his recovery and healing brought me to tears - namely "Joyful accomplishments exist next to painful memories. I found a lot of my healing when I realized my suffering didn't undo my joy." 3 stars - an enjoyable read, but not stellar.
I loved this memoir as an audiobook. I’m not sure how this would’ve translated to the page but I loved hearing JVN’s personality shine through! Fun to listen to. His story was relatable and also eye opening. Recommend!
This was an amazing read for the new year transition. I asked for this for Christmas and was not disappointed. I loved JVN already and now I absolutely adore him. I am also in love with the child version, baby Jack. If you don’t watch Queer Eye, start watching for so many reasons. If you haven’t read this book, read it!
Love, love, love. Jonathan doesn't hold back in sharing every difficult stepping stone to becoming the confident person he is today. I could listen to his book over and over and not just because of the soothing sound of his voice.
