Overall an amazing and so so so heartwarming debut novel.

I’d been wanting to read this for the past few months, and what better time than Pride Month?
I had high hopes, but I found this one hard to get into. There was more narration and long paragraphs than dialogue, whereas I prefer a balance of them. There was also a lot of baseball talk that went over my head, and I felt I would’ve gotten more out of the book if I knew anything about baseball. However, it wasn’t all a total loss.
I liked Gene. He was optimistic, and cared a great deal about his teammates. Luis was kind of standoffish and a jerk to Gene in the beginning, but he was still discovering himself and establishing an identity of his own.
Over time, I noticed them opening up to each other about mental health issues and their identities and experiences with queer-phobic people. I thought the progression of their relationship from rivals to tentative friends to lovers was written realistically.
TW: brief depictions of panic attacks, instances of verbal and systemic transphobia and homophobia, references of misogyny towards trans men

Great book, glad I finally took the time to read it!
3.5 rounded up. I like the story but I just don’t like tropes where people break up because they feel having a partner will slow them down it’s just not my thing. Otherwise cute story. I love the discussion of trans folks in sports and it helps me think about how am I paying attention to this in real life
