Without racism element I'm unsure if it'd have been anywhere near the Booker shortlist.

the white characters say the n-word a LOT, including to Black character's faces, and the book is set in the 21st century. fair warning, but also a book about lynching is bound to feature a lot of overt racism.emmalouisereads's review against another edition

The book features a lot of people that actually exist, which I didn’t know until I’d finished the book. I think I’d have liked to have known beforehand.
It’s very thought provoking.

Minor: Police brutality
Black people are referred to by the n-word a lot. It’s clear that the people using the word are racists, but it might be worth knowing that before reading. Basically, lots of people are KKK levels of racist in this book. And it’s based on real people.readswithdogs's review

The Trees has short chapters, a truly chaotic and diverse cast of characters and tackles Southern living and Reparations with humor. I loved it! There are some bleak fucking scenes and some real gross outs, but the folks getting killed are all despicable human beings so it's all fine. The story moves fast and I honestly kept chuckling over the redneck names and their behavior.
I especially enjoyed the depiction of a certain racist president.

Don't read this if you don't find racist rednecks getting killed hilariousecarper's review against another edition
