This slim book is so worth the read.
Sci-fi that is quiet, plausible, close to home. Four astronauts encounter no other sentient life on their mission to explore planets so distant that they live in "torpor" during the trip.

THIS IS EXACTLY WHY I LOVE SCIENCE FICTION!!! So so so good. It’s kind of inspiring me to go to grad school haha

That feeling of possibility and exploration is, I feel, the defining characteristic of humanity's future. And doing so with those you love, it's a reminder of our connection to one another no matter how far we go, or how much we find.

Chambers has created a compellingly plausible world of space travel to exo-planets, and then uses this to geek out about life sciences, and about the reasons we continue to explore, even when our own world is falling apart.

Its not my favourite of her works (perhaps because I'm not actually a scientist, more likely because it feels less important than "Record of a Spaceborn Few"), but her enjoyment shines through, and it's a very enjoyable read because of it.

I do think we need more sci-fi which points us to a better world in which we avoid an inciting terrestrial calamity though. Please?
