I forgot to write a review of this book when I finished it. Baby girl gets hurt. Mother has some mental health struggles. BFF is a baby-doc. Who hurt the baby?? Couple of little twists thrown in there.
I won this in a Goodreads giveaway! This book is going to stay with me for a while. Parts of it really hit me hard because I can remember being a new mom and feeling isolated and full of anxiety. Liz is a doctor working in the ER when her friend Jess comes in with her baby. The story that Jess tells seems fishy to Liz and she is put in a difficult position. The mystery of what happened to baby Betsy and why will definitely pull you in. The story is told from several viewpoints and there are a few flashbacks. It was very well done and easy to follow. There are many triggering things that could be disturbing to moms, but I also feel that the type of postpartum depression/anxiety discussed in the book is something that everyone should read about and be aware of.
I thoroughly really enjoyed this novel. The writing was excellent.
The exploration of postnatal depression was really interesting.
I liked all the contrasts: between stay-at-home mothers and working mothers, between generations, between nature vs nurture and most prominently, between logic and emotion which is really illustrated in the inner thoughts of both Liz and Jess.
I would definitely read more books from this author.
*I received an advance copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher and I am required to disclose that in my review in compliance with federal law.*

Thanks to NetGalley for the review copy.
This is an excellent novel about the struggles a new mother has to maintain the image of "good mother". The characters were well developed, with a storyline that felt like it could have happened to just about anyone I know.

Just okay. I wasn’t impressed with the “twist” or the pacing. The only reason I finished it was because I felt like I had wasted too much time reading the setup. It seemed like a cut and dry case but it wasn’t but there wasn’t enough to make it redeemable
This was a very good family drama. The characters were believable in their personalities and actions. I had my suspicions early on about what had really happened to Betsey but I definitely didn't see the final conclusion to the incident. Liz's struggle with the situation was very real and her own emotions about her mother and childhood added a good subplot. Thanks to NetGalley for the digital ARC.
Here we find a domestic thriller that came super, super close to achieving a five-star review. I simply could not deny the level of boredom I experienced between the inciting incident and the climax; while I admire Sarah Vaughan's crisp and dramatic tone, and the keen detail applied to the medical setting, the culprit is telegraphed so heavily that the novel is seemingly begging for a Shyamalan-style reveal. By the time it finally arrives, you have flipped through dozens of pages on autopilot, and I fear that the primacy and recency effects are too strong for me to remember the book as a whole. I will happily read Vaughan's next work, as I am sure that a tighter plot with a bit less filler could have found itself a nice cozy spot on my Favorites shelf.
Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review. I went into this book thinking it was a thriller, but it is more of a drama centered around being a mother, mental illness, postpartum illnesses and child abuse. Certainly if you are sensitive to any of those areas, then a trigger warning is warranted. The author does a nice job of pulling you into the story and wanting to know what happened to Baby Betsey, but I felt like I had been reading for quite some time and wasn’t even halfway done yet and wasn’t sure what else the author could put into the story to wrap it up. There is a twist at the end which is somewhat unbelievable. I think having children would help the reader to relate more to this story or feel more invested as it relates a lot to being a parent and the parent / child relationship.
This was an amazing but heartbreaking mystery surrounding motherhood and postnatal depression and it had me hooked. It was so well written and emotional with a few twists and turns. I really enjoyed this!
Four stars. Good book. I had a hard time transitioning from the forward/first chapter into the rest of the book. I also kept on losing track of the dates at the beginning of each chapter -- is this before or is this now?
