This book did a good job of fooling me when I thought I had its number, but there were still some cliche moments and a fair amount of predictability.

Big spoiler don't read.

Was pleasantly surprised by the amount of werecatness that ended up being in it

Wasn’t feeling it at the time, but I may circle back

I read this series in 2014 and then again in 2016 because, in all honesty, I totally forgot I had read it before and checked out this and the second book in the series to give it a shot. While I still enjoyed the book the second time around, I will admit I noticed a few flaws I had missed before. I initially gave this book a 4-star rating, however, I believe I have to lower it to a 3.

Kyra is a gutter rat. She steals for her money and for her food. She's been living in Forge as an orphan for as long as she can remember, and only has Bella, Flick, Lettie, and Idalee as her family. She is approached by the leader of the Guild of Assassins and offered a high-paying position that she can't refuse. However, Kyra begins to grow suspicious of her new employer's actual motives when she notices the Demon Cat warriors have grown bolder in their attacks on the town and surrounding farms. As Kyra begins to become disillusioned with the Guild, she is given a task that forces her to make a decision about where her loyalties lie. She meets a knight named Tristam and the two are forced to work together to stop whatever the Guild of Assassins has planned for the city of Forge, and hopefully, stop the Demon Cat attacks as well.

I have no major complaints about this book, but honestly, it didn't strike me as all that great. At 75% through the book, I felt that it was just dragging on and should have been over by then. Kyra also struck me as a little bit of a special-snowflake. I am reading the second book in the series, but that's only because I checked it out from the library and don't want to return anything unread.

Overall, I liked it. I liked the lack of a love triangle and the writing, but I felt that the story dragged on sometimes.

I wish I could have rated this story higher, but the things that bugged me about it won't let me. Not that it's a bad novel at all. The setting and world building is really good, the action is intense, Kyra and Tristam are pretty good characters (though Kyra is definitely a Mary Sue) and for the first half, the story is really engaging. It was the second half when the big twist was revealed that I was lost. Don't get me wrong– it's cool, but because magic isn't prevalent in most of the story, I found it a little jarring. That, and the pacing sped up way too much. Usually I appreciate a fast pace, but the characters seemed to come to conclusions pretty quickly. It would have been better had the obstacles continued to challenge the characters, and if Kyra hadn't been such a noble heart. Still, I'm going to keep going, because I am a little attached to Tristam and wonder what new angle the story will take (since MIDNIGHT THIEF could have be read as a standalone, given its ending).

i have got to find more books like these

A good idea that falters because there is zero characterization and the twists are both predictable and outlandish. Review to come.

2/5

I picked this up at a book fair in middle school and remembered LOVING it, so I wanted to give it another read. I wasn't disappointed -- I think there are a lot of elements in this story that were cool but just not as fleshed out as I wanted. The world and characters felt a little 2-dimensional which made it hard to care for any of them when anything happened. I think the actual "magic" has a lot of potential moving forward...
