This book was excellent, beautifully written, and didn't fall into the "cliches" that plague most coming-of-age stories. One of the main reasons I gave it five stars was because it made me laugh and cry several times. If McCammon can touch my black heart and evoke an emotional reaction, then he must have done something right. Well played. ;)
I would have liked it more with fewer pages. It does get to a ramblin. It's a fun story and both in the mystery and just the story of the town and relationships and whatnot. Certainly could have done without the final wrap up that adds nothing to the story.

This was an incredible book. It was about growing up and the knocks that come with it in a small town. The mystery inner laced through the book give it just the right conflict and tension to keep you glued every chapter. The growth of the characters and to the world and make you root for them.

A coming of age story that makes you feel nostalgic for a life that was never yours. I enjoyed this book and following the POV of a young boy, Cory. It’s a murder mystery and everything wraps up so well in the end.
This reads almost like a collection of short stories, where each chapter is its own tale, and they all hang together by the thread of a murder-mystery that dips in and out of some of the chapters. A grown-up's retelling of a Hardy Boys mystery with touches of Goosebumps here and there. It's certainly full of nostalgia for a particular small-town American boyhood experience, painted in vivid colors by language that is often beautiful (though sometimes a bit corny). But I thoroughly enjoyed it, even the sometime-campiness of it.

Opis fabuły jednoznacznie wskazuje, że jest to powieść sensacyjna z elementami grozy, przy czym na tylnej okładce mamy taką informację: " Horror, fantasy, powieść obyczajowa i historia prowincjonalnej Ameryki w jednym. Drodzy czytelnicy, jeśli myśleliście, że "TO" Stephena Kinga to najlepszy deszczowiec o latach młodości, to byliście w błędzie. Trzymacie w rękach najlepszą powieść o dojrzewaniu naszych czasów. No może jedną z dwóch...."
No cóż... dla mnie jest to powieść totalnie pozbawiona klimatu - ani to sensacja, ani kryminał, a elementów grozy i horroru tam tyle, co kot napłakał. Już nie wspomnę o porównaniu, a wręcz przebiciu przez tę powieść kultowego "TO", bo to jest naprawdę rażący nietakt. Owszem, jest tam jakaś namiastka wątku kryminalnego, ale tylko NAMIASTKA, bowiem wątek ten jest tak ubogi i okrojony, że nie powinien on w ogóle stanowić wątku głównego w tej lekturze, tylko co najmniej poboczny.
W sumie to miałam wrażenie, że czytam jakiś cykl opowiadań o kuluarach życia lokalnej społeczności, dorastaniu głównego bohatera i odkrywaniu przez niego uroków życia codziennego.
Czuję się bardzo rozczarowana ta lekturą i miałam w stosunku do niej dość spore oczekiwania- spodziewałam się czegoś na miarę kingowskiego "To", a dostałam w sumie sama nie wiem co. Nie rozumiem wysokich ocen, a już w ogóle nie rozumiem, jak coś takiego można porównywać do Kinga.
Może to rzeczywiście lektura nie dla mnie, albo ja się nie znam.
