SPECTACULAR!!!

Well, I had to sit and cry for about 10 minutes after finishing this book. It is SO good, and I legitimately was crying about it being over and just how beautiful it is.

Set in the 60's, with a tone similar to A Christmas Story but also Stephen King, this book blurs magic with reality in a way that captures the essence of childhood and makes you wonder how much is based on reality.

There's a murder and a mystery, but the real magic comes from the every day world as seen through the eyes of a child. There is magic, but in a way that feels like it could have happened.

This is officially in my top 5 favorite books of all time. So well written, so different while feeling so familiar, with humor and sorrow and just at it's core a story about growing up in America, I know these stories will stick with me and I'll definitely come back to reread this one.

Recommend to fans of magical realism, memoir, mysteries, and nostalgia.

"Stand by Me" meets "A Prayer for Owen Meany" meets "Song of Solomon". That's what I called this book when I started it, and that's what I'm calling it now that it's over. I love the way this is written, so perfectly timed and with the exact right amount of detail to make you feel like you know the people in it like... people, not characters. When I read the last words, I closed this book and hugged it and cried just a little bit. I am inspired to write like this. And I'm inspired to live up to the magic in it. What a beautiful story.

Wow! I picked this up on a whim and it was really, really good! A little fantasy, a lot of view into a place and time, and a mystery to boot. Highly recommended!

I just read my new favourite book.

This book had everything, and somehow it all fit together perfectly. It had monsters, ghosts, cowboy shootouts, dinosaurs, and Nazis, and addressed themes like racism, loss, commercialism, and coming-of age, all wrapped up in a murder mystery story about the magic of childhood and community.

I wish there was a three and a half. It wasn't as bad as a three yet not quite a four. It is a beautiful tale and thought provoking, but hard to finish.

What's with the sprouting of wings? Baffled me a bit!
