I think I just finished my new favorite book. I can’t believe it’s taken this long to finally read Boy’s Life…didn’t want it to ever end.
made me sob so easy 5 stars. glad i took my time reading this one physically bc there were so many good quotes. really great coming of age. don’t go into it expecting an intense murder mystery bc that’s kind of just on the back burner through the book. the focus is on growing u p in the 60s.
Okay I don't know if this even counts as a DNF since I barely started it, but I'm marking it so goodreads will give me credit in my book club challenge lol
I loved the poem to start the prologue, and then as soon as the actual writing hit I realized this was not for me. It's a very particular kind of nostalgia-for-80s-boyhood that already doesn't hit for me, and then the writing style itself felt too overwritten (so many words). If I were still reading the amount of books I read when I was part time, I would probably finish this, but I'm reading fewer books so they've gotta count more. I'll go to the bookclub and see if I'm wrong and should give it another chance at the end of the month!
notes for readers' advisory:
readalikes:The Heavens Rise by Rice; The Bottoms by Lansdale; Joyland by King; The Reformatory s also listed but writing style those are real different (maybe because they're horror coming of ages?)
NoveList: coming of age, character driven, suspensful, emotional, slow paced
