this book is for the weird girls and the weird girls only! idk how to explain this but my first thought was if you like mitski, you'll like this😂 this book is dark and twisted but i also think its a really incredible depiction of female coming of age and the brutality of it. brutality i think is the word i would use i felt like even though the character like in the literal world is descending into madness, i think the metaphors and deeper themes are so so relatable and the way that the main characters experiences are described is i think something every woman has felt. the "being a woman is impossibly hard and no one will recognize or admit it" theme spoke to me. also sapphic yearning and horror which is fun. overall i loved how unique and thought provoking this was!

Structurally interesting and it did successfully make my stomach turn, Chlorine was a book I am glad that I read but I wanted more from. I didn't feel particularly invested. 

I enjoyed the exploration of the migrant experience. 

I don't completely understand how to interpret the story but it did feel like a trans allegory. Ren always knew she was a mermaid, other people just couldn't see it. 

Ren was also pretentious, whiney, immature, and narcissistic. She is dramatic frequently. She was both manipulating and a victim. She was not a good communicator. 

We don't get much about were she is when she's telling the story. The reader is acknowledged but the book just ends with her swimming away with no clarity to what came next for any of the cast aside from the pining messages from Cathy.
