This was my first introduction to Greek mythology. The book itself consists of a number of smaller chapters. In a way, Mythos is just a big collection of Greek short stories. The book started off with a whole list of character introductions, each more confusing than the last, though I'm grateful they were explained at all. Some characters seemed needlessly introduced to the reader, never to be seen again. The stories themselves were very well-written and paced, I found myself especially enjoying the story of Eros and Psyche. Some stories were dull, others absurd, enthralling and captivating. It is also especially interesting to see just how many of these Greek myths are still in some way alive today. From words that we adapted into the English language to Cupid on Valentine's Day. Overall, I would rate this book a 3.5 out of 5. I applaud the incredible difficulty and writing skill it must have taken to weave these countless myths into a somewhat coherent timeline, it's just not really my cup of tea.

This would have had four stars (five is practically unheard of from me) were it not for the fact I have a degree in Classical Studies and, as a result, found myself wanting to argue with the entire book (I would not mind discussing the subject with its author). There are countless variations of almost every myth Stephen Fry covers and I do appreciate he cannot cover them all. He can certainly write an engaging book, though, and if I agree with anything it is his larger-than-life portrayal of those featured within.

While three stars might not look like much, I would still recommend Mythos as an interesting read.
