This had the trappings of Gen-X guy comics right from the jump (and admittedly throughout) so I wasn't sure how I was going to get through the dud protaganist's non-stop narration but he just fumbles the bag so many times and the comic gets so ridiculous and then a little romantic? It's a chaotic spin on a revenge story. I love the way the storytelling is broken up by time. Those jump cuts really help move the mopey storyline along. Giving the narration over to Patience at certain points also helps her unfortunately mostly tenuous agency in the book as well. Better than nothing, I suppose, but it is her name on the book, not the guy who's name I can't even remember that talks the whole time. This is only the second or third by Daniel Clowes I've read. I have Eightball on the shelf so I'm interested in reading what many consider his best work.

I think this might be my favorite thing of his. I read it last night and find myself returning to it in my head. It's the perfect mixture of his usual themes and an ornate, intentionally faffy, MacGuffiny plot, giving extra time and space for Clowes to play around with the characters. It's v beautiful and v haunting.

Really strong, solid pulp scifi, kirby x bukowski, gonna be thinking about the ending for a long time, which manages to both withhold and deliver on the wish fulfillment of its well-intentioned yet misanthropic premise. Wowza

Having read nearly all of Clowes works (I'm missing Death Ray) I can say that Ghost World remains a highlight. However Patience sets a new standard and definitely is the best thing he has done.

The story focuses on a young couple and the wife, Patience is found murdered. Her husband then tries to avenge her death by travelling back and forth through time in order to stop the murder. This being a Daniel Clowes comic, you can expect things not to be so straightforward.

Although the plot borders on the ridiculous, it isn't. Clowes does a magnificent job of encapsulating his character's anguish, pain and desperation. Something I always felt he's never done before, not only that this is a visual masterpiece. Colours and shapes come out of nowhere, amazing visuals. It's a color riot and considering how dour Clowes gets, this was refreshing as well.

If I am not mistaken, Patience is Clowes first comic that does not have ties with eightball and is 180 pages long, usually he's expresses more in being brief but with Patience it works. This comic is stuffed with brave moves and it pays off.
