Examination of the appreciation for shadows and light in both the mundanities of everyday Japanese lifestyles and special cultural phenomenona. Notable examples were the lacquerware, candy, candlelight, and the bathroom. Beautiful descriptions of the light effects of shoji paper. Tanizaki also brings up the dilemma of existence in what is seen and unseen, as well as the balance between traditional purism and comforts of modernity. There are some female-objectifying overtures.

There is something about how Tanizaki writes. An appreciation of the little things, and the overlooked - elements inherent to the shadows in our environments. I also appreciated the contrast between Western vs Eastern practices (even if now there seems to be a return to shadows in lighting of modern houses) and how Tanizaki continues to see the simplistic, yet complex beauty of light itself. A recommend for a quick read, can’t rate it higher since it’s just a bit too short.
