Great book. Remember the 1970s show "Scared Straight," whether you'd seen it or just read/heard about it? This is all that, and more. Trejo provides incredibly intimate looks into his family's life while he grew up, saturated in drugs, crime, and violence. By his own admission, he was in a clear-cut death spiral and would probably die before his 30th birthday when he was literally pulled into a twelve-step meeting and started his road toward a sober and drug-free life. That would make a nice story, but what makes this one particularly compelling is the fact that (after a lot of hemming and hawing) he embraced his program and felt that he was obliged to help others in similar circumstances.
Trejo includes his story of stumbling into his Hollywood career and following the path it provided him, all the while surrounded by family and friends still "in the business," in and out of prison, dealing with their own demons of drugs and violence. It's neither an easy or fun read, but Trejo and his writing partner do an excellent job of lightening the mood when they can.

Quite an interesting life this man has lived. He has certainly done well for himself and steered himself down a good path, which could easily not have been the case. A big heart, care and concern for others and a commitment to do better. And his narration of the audiobook made it much more enjoyable. Trejo's voice is rich and gravelly, perfect for telling his gravelly life!
An absolutely brilliant autobiography filled with humor and wisdom! I was amazed at the details that Trejo was able to include in his stories and the humility he has exhibited throughout his entire life/career; "all work is good work". I listened to the audiobook which I highly recommend since he reads it himself.
I loved learning more about Trejo and his story. What an immensely inspiring and engaging tale. The world is lucky to have him.

Wow. Just wow.
Wow. Just wow.
Trejo: My Life of Crime, Redemption, and Hollywood was one of the best celebrity autobiographies I've ever read. I haven't even watched many of Danny Trejo's movies because I'm not much of an action movie fan, so for me to love this book really says a lot!!! True confession: He's highly recognizable as a villain from many movies - he has 414 acting credits on imdb, but where I recognize him most clearly was from watching the Spy Kids movies with my kids. Awww...
The writing is engaging and Danny's stories are fascinating, funny, touching, and inspiring. Trejo is just so down to earth and never seems to lose touch with a bigger purpose of being grateful for his sobriety, grateful to God, and committed to being there to support others in their recovery from addiction. Don't get me wrong...he still shares some great stories about other actors and the movies he's made!
I found Danny Trejo to be humble and ever-grateful for his start in the movies, which began as a fluke because he was on set as a drug counselor trying to find someone who needed his help. He was asked to train one of the actors for a boxing scene and was ultimately cast as the opposing boxer. His career took off from there. Trejo is an inspiring man who started out as a young man doing drugs, committing violent crimes, and ultimately doing time in prison. He found God and sobriety and emerged as a committed drug counselor, dad, and amazing actor. He proves that anyone can turn their life around. I'll end my review with a quote from Danny Trejo, "If you're going to pray, why worry? And if you're going to worry, why pray?"
