I am so glad I listened to this audiobook! Hearing him tell his life story in his own words was captivating. What a humble, funny, self-aware, and good human being. His comeback story from drugs and crime is just amazing. What he has given back to his community is so inspiring! I cannot believe this man is almost 80 years old!

What a good story, what a good life.

It was a real bummer when he had a health scare and immediately wanted to get better so he could work, so he could earn money to support his family. Such an altruistic motive, but if you look deeper it's really fucked - all because of capitalism. If we had UBI, one could heal in order to heal. Sure, maybe you're healing to get back to work, but not because you'll starve or lose your home if you don't.

Viva Danny Trejo!

Loved this book. Didn't realise he had been in some films I had seen.
A truly humble and blessed soul.

Danny Trejo has literally been as low as a person can be. He is a success story that can't really be replicated. He is not a perfect person, and he acknowledges this, but still tries to help those around him. He knows how fortunate he is and tries to lift up those around him. He is 100% himself and never tries to pretend to be anything that he is not. It was interesting to learn more of his history and some of the things that have made him the man he is today.

May be my favorite book of 2021. An inspirational life story that most importantly tackles the subject of substance use disorder and recovery which very few books can accurately do. It also shows how people can truly reflect and learn from their life experiences for the better.

Loved it. From the streets, to drugs, to prison, to husband and to parent, to sobriety, to clean and sober counselor, to film, to restaurateur. Really amazing life story. Even though Trejo is yay-God, the overall message isn't drowned out or overpowered with preaching. Trejo just lives his life and does his best to be a true servant of his god. He treats people the way he wants to be treated, and sees himself in those around him. His struggles may not be mine, but the feelings that go with struggling are universal. I really enjoyed this. While he isn't the greatest audiobook reader, and I did have to listen to it at 1.5 speed (and that was still slow and choppy), his gravelly voice reading his story was totally worth it.

Wow! Even if you've lived under a rock and don't know who Danny Trejo is, I can't recommend this book enough. It's honest, gritty, a little frightening at times, and definitely eye-opening to the plight of addicts. It's also an inspiring story of one of the few Mexican American icons in film. I highly recommend it.

Excellent memoir. I listened to the audio book, which was narrated by the author. I really don't think it would have been as impactful if I had just read it myself. Until recently, I didn't think of Danny Trejo as anyone other than the stereotypical scary bad guy in a lot of movies. I knew nothing about his struggles in life and all the great work he has done to help others in recovery. Highly recommend this one.

I absolutely loved listening to Danny Trejo narrate his own story. He is very open about his past and relationships here. Hard topics and truths are not shied away from. He really is inspiring. I highly recommend this audiobook.

If this man can turn his life around then anyone can. God bless this man and his journey through life. This is a must read.
