This memoir was very moving. Trejo discusses his upbringing, time in prison, his generational trauma and how that effected him, his addiction and his recovery, his acting career, and how he changed his life. I applaud Trejo for being so vulnerable and sharing his story. I did struggle with some of the misogyny in the book, but I am glad that Trejo addressed this and brought up how it’s wrong.
This book is about the actor Danny Trejo and how he grew up. I'm not a big fan of the type of movies he does, but I've always been interested in him.
He takes us back to when he was a kid up till like the year 2020. He has lived a very hard life which I didn't expect. He's been in and out of jail and on and off drugs for like 50 some odd years of his life. He one day decided that was not the life he wanted to live anymore and has given his life to helping people get off drugs and stay out of jail. He now owns his own record company, restaurant, and still acts at 70+ years old. I couldn't put this book down.

What an enjoyable audio book. Loved hearing Trejo’s life story in his own voice. Always playing the bad guy, he really is a nice guy! Admits his faults, which are many, which just makes you more fond of him. Love his drive to keep people from the destruction of addiction.

It is fairly common knowledge that Danny Trejo had a troubled adolences, with several stints in prison before finding fame in Hollywood, but that doesn't even scratch the surface of his life. He did hard time in San Quentin, Soledad, Folsom, etc. He was a bad motherf**ker, with a troubled family life and some bad influences from early in his life. He was a violent man and heavily into drugs. But even that isn't a good description of the man, because he loves his family, loves life, and one of the best early parts of the book describes how he would reinact scenes from the Wizard of Oz to stay sane in solitary. After getting clean, he dedicated his life to helping others with getting clean and staying out of jail. He still made poor decisions, couch surfing with friends during the height of his movies career, and his family life was rough as his children inherited some of his addictive habits, but he perservered, and it sounds like his life is better than ever, even as he nears age 80. It is truely amazing to read about all he lived through, and how his faith and committment to life never waivered (luckily, he doesn't get too preachy). It is a treat to listen to his narration, and his occasional spontaneous laughter is immensly endearing. Highly recommended.
