What a fascinating and wonderful man.

I wish I had the words to properly review this book in the way it deserves. I didn’t know much about Danny Trejo besides Trejo’s Tacos and him being Machete from Spy Kids, so reading this all was a huge eye opener. This memoir is honest and so well-written, and Trejo does a fantastic job of explaining his life and situations while also calling himself out. This memoir is definitely one of the best ones I’ve read.

This was a long one, but the fact is that Danny Trejo has led a long, winding, interesting life and thus I don't think much could have been done to edit it down without leaving out any of the rich details. I enjoyed listening to the audiobook, which Danny Trejo narrates himself.

Prior to reading, I was familiar with Danny Trejo from his role as Machete, but I had no idea about his journey of recovery from drug addiction and the multitude of ways he has helped and inspired others get clean. That story alone is inspiring, but there are so many others packed in his memoir.

This is truly a tale of redemption, of turning one's life around and hiving back. Of service to community, of making the best of one's circumstances and using one's experiences to impact the lives of others. Simply beautiful. He has a face that everyone recognizes even if you don’t remember the name, but his life off camera is the thing Hollywood blockbusters are made of.

Fascinating, engaging, and clearly written with a lot of perspective and love. So glad to have read this!
