I’m new to reading autobiographies and wow!! I’ve always loved Danny, simply because he’s a strong, Hispanic presence in Hollywood, but I had no idea what a life he’s lived. I’m in awe at his resilience, his unconditional love for his family and friends, and I feel proud of him like I know him??
Some background on this well-known, but mysterious face. While not a masterpiece, it was enjoyable. Especially early on, the artistic decision to relate Trejo's story episodically in flashbacks, rather than strictly as a chronology helped keep interest and perspective. It also allowed the "life of crime" aspect of his story to be treated bluntly, but without glorification. The latter part of the story skates along more linearly, yet becomes somehow a bit harder to connect the dots as his story is presented more simplisticly as, "This happened, then that happened. After that this other thing happened." So much has inexplicably just seemed to "work out" for him, that his story doesn't work much as a role model, other than by more direct evangelical exposition. Danny is an unforgetable character and he has had many people in his life who have believed in him and wanted to work, and profit, with him, from movies to restauranting, after reading his story it's clear that he knows these opportunities don't come around for everyone, and he won't let one slip away. Perhaps one of the most poignant points from the book is Trejo's assertion that "There are no 'bad' movies". Every movie puts someone to work. Every movie is made to the best ability of it's staff, regardless of the perceived artistic results. A friend used to read every page of a local free paper delivered monthly. I would just toss it in a box for packing or masking, but she said, "Someone put a lot of love and effort into this." "You should respect that by at least looking at it." Two curiously similar points of view in our hyper-critical society. There may not be any "bad" movies, or books, but there are certainly ones that I don't "like" or "enjoy". This one was good, but paradoxically as the story picked up pace toward the end, it became less engaging. Can't wait to hit Danny's taco stand and also El Indio in Pacoima where his giant mural is painted.

Perfect timing for me to read this book. It gave some insight on prison life. It was inspiring and reminds you not to judge someone based on appearance or one chapter of their life.
Danny Trejo has lived an interesting life and done a wonderful job telling it.
I couldn't put it down! Loved it. I just wish there was a little more depth to parts of the story, more insight into what Trejo felt.
This book is amazing. I didn't just learn about Danny Trejo; I learned so much and was reminded so many times of how to live in the world in a way that creates and fosters love and acceptance.
It's important. All of it.
