I will admit, like others, I struggled with the narration of this book. But once I got used to it and could really focus on the story I was amazed that someone could survive so much. One of his medical diagnoses alone would be enough for one person and he ended up with all of those things happening? It’s not something you usually see…and to still have such a positive outlook now. He just seemed so humbled by the experiences and, while I can’t relate to any of it, it just made it feel more relatable than others that I’ve read.

This is a memoir that tops many memoirs - what a captivating life and story - so inspiring. I was a fan before but I am a super-fan now...

I have loved Danny Trejo for I don't know how long now (it may have started with that Brady Bunch Snickers commercial, but I'm sure it was much earlier) and this memoir has only deepened that love.
Danny Trejo is absolutely awe-inspiring, and I'm not just referring to his very imposing and unmistakable visage. This memoir takes us through his life, beginning as a young boy on the streets of LA through some of the most notorious prisons (Folsom, Soledad, etc) to a life of redemption and fame. He's gone through drug addiction, and since being out of prison has gone out of his way to help those struggling with it. "When a kid loses fear of consequences, that's when society has lost them," he mentions early in the book (p. 9). He has seen it in himself, his family, as well as others around him. "Knowing what the stakes are doesn't mean you'll do the right thing" (p. 19). If anything, this memoir has shown that, as a sponsor, he will do anything he can to help you through it. "My experiences made me who I am. There's nothing I would change" (p. 144).
Trejo is well-beloved as a villain throughout his movie career, and also well-loved now by fans of all ages as Machete in Spy Kids and Machete (both of which, I am sorry to say, I have not seen). I think one of my favorite movies is Once Upon a Time in Mexico, where he played opposite Johnny Depp, and I just recently watched Muppets Most Wanted where he played himself as an inmate. There is a touching behind-the-scenes story for that last one mentioned, but I don't want to spoil anything. His role as himself in Madness with the Method had me nearly in tears, it was absolutely adorable.
Danny Trejo is incredible. The number of things he's been through, the way he's turned his life around, and how he seeks to continue helping others in the midst of his continuing acting career is mind-blowing! The man is a beast and his story is truly inspirational.

Wow! I felt inspired after reading this one. Trejo’s life has been one of ups and downs but he always found ways to persevere. His life of tragedy, love and loss is one that should be heard by all.

Most of us have seen Danny Trejo off and on throughout the years in movies. In fact, I remember him vividly as one of the bad dudes in Con Air.

He’s got such a memorable face and his tattoo on his chest is one of a kind!

I think the first time I saw him in a movie was From Dusk Till Dawn?!
When I found out he did a memoir last year, I had to listen to it.

What I did not know about was how brutal and crazy his life was before he became a movie star!

I enjoyed listening to him talk about his life in prison, his struggles with family, and also struggling with being an addict.
I commend him on finally getting clean from drugs and booze.
I love how he is using his experience to try to get others clean in the community.

In the book, Danny Trejo also talks about his love relationships and how he was not a faithful husband.
He acknowledges this and I like how he puts the blame on himself for the infidelities and not the women in his life. He’s honest and doesn’t try to cower from responsibility.

Honestly, there’s lots of great stories and topics in this memoir!

I had a great time listening to it even if Danny’s not the best narrator.
I would have rated this higher if someone else had narrated it because the pacing and pauses could have been better.
But at the same time, it wouldn’t have felt as REAL with someone else narrating so I’m a bit conflicted on this.

Get to this one if you like memoirs or want to know more about Danny Trejo the person, not just the actor.

It has a lot of humor, heart and I'm glad to find out how interesting his life has been!

if Trejo isn't a god then he's definitely a demigod.

Pretty much what you’d expect: moving, funny, and full of incredible stories (he was hypnotized by Charles Manson!).
