This genius novel is a perfect sequel to 'Oryx and Crake'. This Dystopian/Speculative Fiction novel reads like poetry and paints an intricate picture of the failings of humanity. This novel does a bang-up job of answering the questions we are left with after the first novel and once again warns us of the dangers of a hyper-capitalist society.
this book, however, is not for the faint-hearted. Sensitive readers beware

The level of detail Atwood creates in her speculative worlds always astounds me...5 stars there. The relationship and story arc that lacked believability for me: Ren and Jimmy. On one hand, if Jimmy was Ren's last "typical" love experience (pre total world meltdown), it makes sense that she would be stuck there socially and emotionally, but that's what also made the situation a little unbelievable for me. The torch she carried for him throughout her life was just a little contrived. Atwood did craft Ren as emotionally immature and child-like, so I can see the reasoning behind the torch for Jimmy, but it felt a little too convenient at the end of the novel. And, the way all the characters' lives intersected at the end = contrived. Still, a great, great read.

You do not need to read the first book but why would you deny yourself a piece of the puzzle that is the MaddAddam trilogy? The novels tie together with such subtlety that you find yourself relating the events well after reading them and flipping back just to make sure your assumptions are correct. Being immersed in this story is riveting and terrifying. Atwood's creation is too realistic to brush off once the book is closed; lingering at the back of my mind until a quiet moment releases it back into conscious acknowledgement. Being part of Atwood's vision has been an experience unlike any other.
