ah penelope and colin, i'm such a sucker for friends to lovers (and childhood friends to lovers, though less so) so i really was looking forward to this one. and it certainly didn't disappoint.

while parts of colin's story do sort of feel like a retread of benedict's story from an offer from a gentleman, i feel like colin is more realized. he actually worked towards finding himself and his voice, he explored the world and found something of himself outside of his family and the woman that he falls for. he's sweet and caring and loving and attentive and probably the best of the bridgerton men (thus far at least)

and penelope! ah! my sweet wallflower, it's so nice seeing her bloom after so long, and the unraveling of the whistledown drama was delicious. sure, the stakes in this one may not have been as high as previous books, but for me, that's such a welcome change.

this is also the first time we break the 'male main character is caught with female main character in compromising position and thus they're forced to get married to save her honor' mold. colin and pen thankfully avoid that trope, and their love story is just sweet! which isn't to say this is pure fluff, but... i dunno, as the fourth book in a series, i appreciated how low-stakes this one felt.
