This one is almost 5 stars for me purely based on how much I enjoyed it. The audiobook was really well done and it has everything I want in a book - complicated family dynamics, suspense, a small but endearing romance, etc. I flew through this and I don’t even care about horses ;)

I really wanted to like this book. My sister-in-law is part of the horse community and with loving thrillers I thought this one would be fun. What I got was a book written in way too many points of views, and full of unnecessary details. This book was long and drawn out and there were many opportunities that this could have been paired down. I found the women of this story to be grating and naïve and out for themselves in the worst possible way. Their children were entitled and spoiled. I really don’t think this is how the horse community usually works, as my sister-in-law speaks highly about her memories and time there – so maybe this book is a fringe case.

I wouldn’t count any other work by this author out based on this book alone, but I might give it pause.

I will not be posting this review on my Instagram page, only leaving the review here and goodreads.

Dumb. I should have known I would hate the riding stuff and how it was written and of course I did. It’s clear the author had horse knowledge but had to dumb it down for the book and that just pissed me off. Also I didn’t understand
Keirnans motivation for killing Pamela.
also the ending with
Douglas and piper
was stupid and didn’t add anything to the story. In general just kind of boring with and unsatisfying ending.

I really enjoyed this but I can see how thriller fans might not. I grew up with horses and running around a barn everyday in the summer so I was invested in the horse/barn drama rather than figuring out who committed the murder the whole book is leading up to.

I have been riding horses since I was 9. Growing up, I was a barn girl and a horse girl. I was at the barn constantly - helping with lessons, riding, working, and enjoying every second of it. I wouldn't change any of it for the world. And now, I'm still a nearly 37-year-old horse girl, who loves being at the barn, loves teaching her newbies how to ride, and helping install the love of being a horse girl to the next generation.

My experiences differed from #GirlsAndTheirHorses though. I wasn't in the show jumping world (saddle seat and American Saddlebreds) and while there is certainly A LOT of money in the industry I grew up in, this one definitely portrayed the elite of the elite.

With that said, I certainly related to much of the story. I mean, except for the whole mysterious death part. I really enjoyed every second of this story. It was incredibly fast-paced. While the barns and horses were the main stories, so many other topics were discussed - mean girls, greed, wealth, alcohol and drug abuse, and pregnancy... it's a very multi-layered story.

If you're a horse girl and grew up in a barn, like me, you'll certainly enjoy this one. Even if you're not a horse person, this is a fun one to read.
