What a story - it proves that money does not necessarily make you happy. I feel sorry for the horses and not any of the characters.

As an equestrian, I am always wary of "horse" books, as far too often, they are written by people who know next to nothing about horses. This author does, but...this book isn't actually about horses. Rather, it's about a bunch of extremely unhappy, nasty, bitter, two-dimensional people about whom it's quite difficult to feel anything positive. OK, perhaps two of the characters show a shred of decency but on the whole, I couldn't root for any of these folks. The murder mystery was mildly surprising - not so much who was murdered but how. Overall, though, this was not a fun book. I'd hoped it would be a fun beach-type read, with interesting, fleshed-out characters but sadly, it fell very flat.

This book really held my attention and was hard to put down. It was a lot like a “Big Little Lies” in the horse world. A tight knit horse barn where moms brought their daughters to take lessons from the much revered Kairen and his staff. So much going on - oh the drama!

“Anyone who didn’t believe in magic had never ridden a horse.”

Not only did this book have a fun thriller aspect to it, but it had so much depth. This book discussed the intricacies of motherhood, friendship, and growing up. But, above all, it was a love letter to horses. As an equestrian, I was immediately sucked in and couldn’t put it down. The horse world sometimes has a very bad reputation for being full of rich, catty women. This book used that stereotype to its advantage while also highlighting the wonderful things about the horse world.

"...as if the only way into her past was through her daughter's future"

Such a fun, twisty story set in the rarified world of horse girls and their "barn moms." The plot will keep you guessing until the end, but for me, the relationships between the girls and their ambitious mothers was what kept me turning the pages.

I enjoyed this a lot and will check out Brazier's backlist now.

Every single character in this book is an absolutely terrible person.

Girls and Their Horses mostly follows the Parker family (Heather, Maple, and Piper) as they join Rancho Santa Fe Equestrian in California after they move from Texas. The daughters Maple and Piper ride and work with the horses, while mom Heather hangs around all day with the other moms and gossip. The head of the Ranch though is a real piece of work and works Heather for all the money she has in order to do what he feels is best for his business no matter who it hurts along the way.
With all the different Parker family POVs we also get two other POVs one being the detective investigating the murder and one of them being another child's parent.

Overall this book did keep me intrigued because I needed to know who died and why. I didn't care about any of the characters at all, they were all terrible human beings and at one point I was hate reading this book because I disliked all of them so much. Horse world parents are just as bad as dance moms just far more money and people are involved it seems. At times it did feel like we were getting a lot of different pov's making things jumbled up and showing how terrible everyone truly was. The mystery part of it was sad because of all the people who got hurt along the way who were innocent and had nothing to do with the original issue. By the end of the book the Parker family is okay, and they have learned a lot along the way. I still never liked any of the characters and while one character did have some redemption by the end I still feel kind of meh about this book.
I will give the author this, she kept me entertained enough that I needed to know who died.

If you love horses and the horse world in general you will probably enjoy this book. It just wasn't for me.

This will be the last time I try to read this author. I have finally learned my lesson.

Libby audio. This was good! And originally not on my radar. It is a MMD SRG 2023 pick. For anyone who devoured Saddle Club books as a kid and grew up at a barn. This is dark and bitchy.

I was mildly entertained by this book because I’m a fan of the subject matter. I still don’t know what the characters look like after finishing the story, and thats a pet peeve of mine. All the action came at the end, I would have liked some mid-point climax.

I won’t read again or recommend, but it wasn’t the worst book I’ve ever read.
