Not sure what to think of this one… or the twist at the end.
This story had me feeling all sorts of ways.
It starts kind of like your basic haunted house story but soon escalates into a bizarre and freaky nightmare. There are a lot of red herrings, twists and turns that will make you question the reliability of what the narrator is seeing; is this truly a haunted house, natural phenomenon, or an elaborate prank.
Felix is staying in a haunted house for 13 nights to then write about his experience. Hopefully it’ll become a bestseller. He doesn’t believe in ghosts, but his friend who comes to stay with him at Rotter House does. As the nights pass and they sleep through the days, never leaving the house, a claustrophobic feeling of dread magnifies and manifests into strange encounters. The house has a bloody and sordid history, so will these two survive their stay?
“If there is no living person inside the house to experience the haunting, is the house really haunted?"
I did feel absolutely terrified at times during this story, but also got tired of the two characters going through the same motions, conversations, and reactions. Just got a bit too wordy when I wanted them to be trying to figure out what the heck was going on in the creepy house. Loved the ending though.

I did enjoy this. It was one of those books that didn't feel like anything special, but for some reason all I wanted to do was listen to it.
I enjoyed the fact that Thomas and Felix were both horror fans and loved the sprinkling of horror movies and lit throughout the book but I often felt their conversations seemed to just be repeating themselves. Good twist at the end though being a horror fan myself I did have my suspicions about 1/2 way through and found I was correct. I wish we had gotten more about the actual house though as it seemed to have some crazy stuff going on even without the added drama of the two main characters. Enjoyable haunted house read and I liked listening to the audio book but 3 stars because sometimes the dialogue just dragged and seemed drawn out or unnecessary at several points.

I was definitely expecting one of the twists— “the thing” that kept the two friends apart for the past year, but I did NOT expect the ending, and I LOVED it. Still debating on rating, as the book was slow for me but very well written, darkly humorous, and definitely written by someone who has a passion and appreciation for the horror genre.
