My favorite type of genre is horror but more specifically paranormal and haunted house books. This book started off very well and towards the entire middle section was very slow with a lot of repetitive narration. I really wanted to finish this book and I thought I was going to have difficulty doing so however about 3/4 of the way through it picked up and was amazing. The ending I would have never guessed was happening and I would highly recommend this novel. It's spooky, creepy, intense, sad, and leaves you altered.

Felix, a skeptic, and Thomas, a believer in the supernatural, are supposed to stay in Rotter House for 13 nights. They are trying to mend their friendship after a devastating experience. Felix is there to write a book about the haunted house and wanted Thomas to come along. When strange things start happening, Felix slowly starts believing in the supernatural though he tries to talk through it.

Is it supernatural or is someone playing a twisted game?

A great book. It moves slowly at first then picks up speed in the best way. I finished the audiobook in one sitting.

Rotter House is Felix’s last chance. He’s written a few books that haven’t gotten him the success he seeks, and this book about living in a haunted house for twelve nights is his last bid at fame and success before he throws in the towel. A skeptic at heart, he’s doubtful he’ll have much ghostly phenomena to write about. However, he quickly realizes that Ritter House might just be the real deal.

Ugh, what a bummer!!! It’s such a good premise and such a good cover. But I regret I actually spent money on this one instead of waiting for the library copy. Here’s what I did not like:

-Just outright racist tropes and plot lines

-The dialogue was awful. A lot of pop culture and meta references, which I don’t mind if it’s done well (like, think Scream). However, here they were repetitive, out of place, and I felt like I was getting hit over the head with the author just dumping random horror pop culture on me, not like I was reading two real people have a conversation.

-Pace: The beginning was slow with a lot of meandering, repetitive, unrealistic conversations between the protagonist and his best friend, but the middle really picked up and was actually genuinely creepy. Too bad that didn’t last…

-The ending!!!!! What a freaking miss. Totally destroyed this book for me (or it would have, if the racist tropes and weird handling of race in general in this book hadn’t already ruined it).

Overall, it’s a haunted house story. Maybe give it a try if you like an unreliable narrator, but honestly I’d give this one a skip.

Felix and his friend, Thomas stay at an abandoned mansion in order for Felix to write his next book on creepy travel destinations. However, Felix has always been skeptical and this time decided to to spend two solid weeks completely cut off from the outside world in to have the full experience. Both of them are also big horror fans and are very familiar with all the haunted house tropes and do their best to avoid them. This is also a great opportunity for Felix and Thomas to catch up since they haven’t seen each other in a year.
Haunted homes are my jam when it comes to horror books, but this was extra fun since it twists all the tropes on its head, the heavy meta references to other stories, and lastly the great dialogue between these two characters. You can absolutely feel all the tension and awkwardness in being separated for a year, yet still that weird familiarity that comes when you reunite. Overall, I loved this and wasn’t able to predict how this was going!
