Karina Halle is an auto-read author for me. It was a quick read but man were some of these scenes tough đŸ˜« absolutely make sure you read the trigger warnings before continuing which Karina displays at the beginning of the book. I’m so glad that this ends with a HEA

This is a dark Viking novella where the FMC is captured by a band of Vikings that attacks the state where she lives. I heard this originally had no HEA and I kind of wish that was still the case. There were a lot of surprising moments where I didn’t know where the story was going to take us but I feel very meh overall. Sometimes a dark romance should have no happy ending. Just to spice things up and give us the unexpected. Just a thought.

Ravager gave me a lot to love as a dark romance, but I ended up feeling like it fell just short of being something I truly loved. I think I would’ve loved this more as a dark romance just between Cherine and Erik, but throwing Rolf into the mix often seemed like too much without any real payoff. I felt no connection between Rolf and Cherine; even when Cherine claimed she was initially enjoying her time spent with Rolf, I couldn’t feel any real connection between them. To me, Rolf was nothing but a catalyst to draw Erik and Cherine closer together, and everything physical between Rolf and Cherine was just wasted words on the page.

Erik was where it was at for me. I loved that Erik was portrayed as a reformed man. By the time Cherine meets Erik, he no longer associates with the man he once was, and he spends his journey throughout the novella proving he’s changed, both to himself and his Viking brothers. For me, Erik was a much more developed character than Rolf, and he was the easiest one to relate to.

This romance doesn’t stray too far into dark romance territory. As a MFM romance, there are no swords crossing and we only truly get one scene where all three characters are involved. Again, I think I would’ve enjoyed this story more without the distraction of Rolf, as he only seemed to detract from the endgame of Cherine and Erik.

Overall, the darker aspects of this story were just “meh” for me. I liked Cherine as a strong female character and liked her storyline with Erik, but it felt like most of the romance was trying too hard to be something it wasn’t.

the paper cutout of flat stanley i made in second grade was still more dimensional than these characters.

ok but truly though this is peak “my dick has led me places i wouldn’t even go with a gun” bc ovulating and a passion for good viking books (lyx robinson!!!) made me leap at “dark smutty MFM vikings” and this was a huge miss. too short to be developed well, but great if you’re in the mood for something violent, rife with TWs (seriously check them before reading), smutty, and yet somehow still boring.

If I find a Viking book, I’m going to read it. Karina Halle re-wrote an old book of hers and it was a fun one!

Cherine’s (age 18) village gets torn up and savagely destroyed by Vikings. Everyone she ever knew is dead. And she was knocked unconscious and kidnapped by a scary warrior.

“I didn’t know how to fight; I barely knew how to live.”

Rolf the Walker the leader and Erik the Axe (age 26) are childhood friends who also have vibes of distrust and more of a frenemies relationship. They both are quite interesting in this beautiful young woman they decided to keep and Rolf tasks Erik to “get her prepared” for Rolf. He’s got one month..

This is sorta a love triangle without the love part for most of the story and ends with it being MF only and an HEA.
But the spice is mainly MFM

Fast paced!
HEA

“deep inside my heart, something stirred. A restlessness, a fear. A knowing that we wouldn’t be able to continue like this forever, me being shared by these two proud, beastly men. At some point, I would have to make a choice. Or rather, a choice would be made for me.”

Fun, violent, spicy Viking times!
