Funny and sometimes scary, I was charmed by the illustrations and the different fears. My personal favourite was Fear #16.
It was really interesting to see all these little things people had internalised as fears, and the illustrations brought colour and life to the statements, making it an engrossing read.
I love that some many great web comic have recently gotten published in book form. It's not that I can't just sit on my phone or laptop and read through their archives, it's simple enough, I just like being able to pull the book up on my kindle and scrolling through it at my leisure. Deep Dark Fears came as a recommendation based on some other web comic in book form that I read so I basically went into this without any idea what it was and frankly its great. It's a comic about peoples truly deepest darkest fear, and it was created by the author based on submissions he receives. He then illustrates those fears, sometimes in humorous ways and sometimes the fear itself is what's funny. The best part about this are the obscure and strangely specific fears that may not have ever occurred to anyone besides the person it originally resided within, but now is out there for all to see. This is a winner for it's concept alone and the best part is there will never be an end to it with so much material to work with.
Fran Krause’s Deep Dark Fears is funny, bizarre, horrifying, and relatable as heck. It’s a collection of comics based on real-life fears from readers around the world. Like being afraid of slipping into wrought-iron gates and impaling yourself through the eye (My version of this is clothing racks in department stores—they’re always right at my eye level). Or that, on cold winter days, when you can see your breath, that also means people can see the little tufts of warm air as you fart.

- Both books are full of irrational fears people sent to the author.
- A lot of the fears were so outlandish that they were hilarious, but some of the fears were pretty dumb. When I say dumb, I mean there is NO possible way that could EVER happen dumb.
- Both books were fun quick reads, and they were perfect for the 24 Hour Read-a-Thon.

I received a copy of this book through NetGalley from Ten Speed Press, so thank you very much to everyone involved!
This was quite a lovely book about all the, you guessed it, deep dark fears that people have. I can'd decide if the book was terrifying because there were things I never thought to be afraid of, or comforting knowing that I am not the only crazy person out there with this fear.
The illustrations were wonderful and the layout was great! I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed the Gashlycrumb Tinies because it has that same lovely dark humor to it!

Riveting.
As someone who's always been fascinated by unusual fears, this was nailed up my alley.
These are not the normal fears (spiders, balloons, clowns). These are the niche corners of our psyches.
I.e.
Part of me needs to know who these people are, but I think the anonymity is appropriate.

Fear #31: When my dogs want to come inside, I need to check the whole house, looking for my dogs, in case the ones outside are shapeshifters. Each of the brief descriptions caption full-color panels depicting the events described. The symbiosis of these elements is subtle in some cases, but the pictures absolutely enrich the text.

These are great. The kind of irrational fears most of us have and never really talk about.
Can I tell you mine?
What if I’m severely handicapped, but everyone just treats me normal? Like everyone’s doing this Truman Show thing where they let me have a normal life, but every reaction, every dealing with another person, it’s all the result of pity for poor, handicapped Pete.
