remember when i finished the first book in this duology and said i thought the second one was going to be a lot better? i was so wrong lol. what on earth was this????? it just felt so messy and oh my god it dragged on and on i'm kinda scared about being in a slump now after reading this. i thought the characters again had a lot of potential after the first book but i just??? something about the way they were written just wasn't good, its like the author tried to give them depth but it just didn't work. i could not stand yuki which was unfortunate considering her role in the story, the other 3 main girls i did like but i wasn't attached and this is the kind of book where the author needs to make that happen. the magic in this was also just wack like i had no clue what was going on half the time? same goes for the plot tbh, part of the fun with a mystery/thriller is trying to guess the reveal but there was way too much going on in this that made it too confusing to even try.
i do wanna give some positives..... the representation in this was still very good + i enjoyed that even though its not the best executed... i finished it which is something! i do wish i liked this more :/

4 stars. I loved this even more than book one. This is a seriously underrated series. Pohl’s writing has definitely improved and I feel like this one was better paced as well. I was never bored and it had me hooked from the beginning.
I remember not liking Yuki in the first book. What a surprise that by the end of this one she was my favorite of the bunch. She’s the most complex character and I loved her growth and development. And the sweet little romance between her and Ella even though it was last minute and I would’ve loved to see that play out more. All of the characters are likable and I loved their friendship and how they stuck together.
The stakes are much higher and it made for an exciting read. I adored it and I’m sad that this is only a duology but I am excited to see what Pohl does next. I cannot recommend these books enough. They’re a fun time.

While a nice and satisfying sequel to the first book, it has enough flaws that make it feel somewhat detached from it's pair.
Following the last book, the story remains strong with enough interesting twists and turns to keep you wanting to learn more and with characters lovable and interesting enough to care and want to see more of. However, it simply tries too hard to be contemporary and funny in places where it simply shouldn't be. Seriously, I get that we're in a more online age, but making references to memes during mayor character beats and crucial moments feels a little too forced. The same can be said about trying to fit certain tropes by sheer force in places where they wouldn't have happened naturally, to the point where some dialogue felt taken straight from a tumblr funny-post that got 100k likes back in 2015. It also weirdly feels like it's trying really hard to be picked up by Netflix at certain points.
This was more of a pet peeve, but making it so every time Yuki got narration time we would see the same sentences and descriptions of how the darkness was consuming her felt very tiring. The first few times it was fine, but putting that in all of her scenes was simply too much. I feel it would've worked better if used sparingly or every now and then
Nevertheless it was a good read and an interesting continuation to it's predecesor, though it must be said that the previous book stands way better by itself.
Overall, the book felt like a loose fit, and not because the story wasn't good enough.
