The Phantom Tollbooth is regarded as a classic, and it's important to keep that in mind while reading it. I have to admit I lost my patience with it as I read it to my 8 year old, and often thought about putting it aside until he was ready to read it himself. That's how I feel this book would be best absorbed, solo reading as a child. If I had come across this book in my youth, I may have been more excited reading it. Still, it has a lot of merit and an interesting story and message. Recommended for older kids, maybe 10-12 range to best understand the clever wordplay throughout.

This is a fun & inventive book & I appreciate that a lot, but it also unfortunately reminds me of the massive headache I got while reading a large print copy of it at my sister's softball game & of the play version of it I was in that was the definition of chaos, so it only holds a three star ranking in my heart

Pure joy. The Phantom Tollbooth has such a special place in my heart. Every page is perfect and it will hold up forever and I really believe that!!! I’ve always said this was my favorite book and each time I revisit the Lands Beyond I just double down on that. I read it countless times as a kid and it is still so absolutely magical and delicious and fun and smart to me now as it was then. Like genuinely emotional reading - I had to pace myself to go really slow and savor it (something I never did all those times through when I was younger). The illustrations are so nostalgic too and just ohhhh I love this book with everything I have to love❤️

I probably would have enjoyed this more as a child, but I finally got around to it at 41. The combination of art and writing brought me back to the schoolhouse rock cartoons of the early 80s. It's a quest filled with whimsical, shallow character who bounce around a fantasy geography. It wasn't bad, but it didn't grab me and I had to make myself finish it. i usually avoid doing that with my recreational reading, but if I get to the halfway point on a classic I will tough it out.
