prior to starting fireborn, i was heading into a slump. i read several books that just weren’t great. that being said, middle grade books seem to always pull me out of a slump.
fireborn is action packed, from start to finish. there were no “boring bits”. the plot was well developed. there was only one scene that i wasn’t a fan of (dealings with a spider). a personal dislike that others might not mind.
the characters were fun and nice to watch grow. some characters i disliked at the start quickly became favourites. (and anyone who knows me, knows once I’ve made my mind up it’s hard to change!). each character brought something interesting to the story. my personal favourites are twelve and dog.
admittedly, the naming was a little confusing at first (i kept thinking five was six and six was five – don’t ask me why).
overall, this was an easy book to read, that kept me hooked from the start to the end. i’m so excited for the next book (i can’t believe I have to wait so long for it!!), and to see what happens next.

An amazing read, despite the size of the book and being in a recent reading slump I utterly devoured this book in one night. It’s an easy read for sure but that doesn’t mean it’s not exciting, Twelve’s journey as she goes on this quest to get her friend back is truly fun. A fun read for someone looking for something easy to read
Graphic: Death and Death of parent
Moderate: Fire/Fire injury, Injury/Injury detail, Torture, Blood, Child death, Confinement, and Death

Clearly inspired by some of the highly popular fantasy books of the past three decades but a delight all the same.
If you're looking for a new middle grade fantasy to get into that is filled with monsters, magic and unlikely friends - then this is for you.

Second read: October 2022
Just as fun, action packed and exciting as the first read. I came to appreciate the characters and their emotional complexities even more the second time around and have found myself with a real soft spot for this cast. Can’t wait for book two.
First read: May 2022
With non-stop action, multidimensional characters, subtle queer side rep, exciting world building and a melancholy yet captivating darkness shadowing the story, this was a solid start to a new magical adventure series and I'm already eager for book two.
