Twaalf en het bevroren bos is het debuut van de Britse Aisling Fowler en is eveneens het eerste deel van een nieuwe jeugdboekenserie, Vuurbloed. Het verhaal gaat over Twaalf die alles heeft opgegeven om toe te treden tot het jagersfort. Tijdens het afleggen van de eed heeft ze afstand gedaan van haar naam, daarom is ze nu een nummer. Twaalf en de andere leerlingen trainen keihard om een echte jager te worden, maar dat gaat niet zonder slag of stoot. Als het fort op een dag wordt aangevallen wordt een medeleerling ontvoerd. Twaalf besluit haar te gaan zoeken, ook al brengt ze zichzelf daarmee in gevaar. Fowler en vertaler Maren Mostert nemen je mee op een reis vol avontuur in een winters prehistorisch landschap. Lukt het Twaalf om haar medeleerling te redden en het zelf te overleven?
Al in het eerste hoofdstuk weet de auteur de lezer mee te nemen in het verhaal. Twaalf wordt geïntroduceerd en het wordt direct duidelijk dat ze niet op haar mondje is gevallen. Ze vindt het lastig om zaken over zich heen te laten komen en vecht direct terug als iemand iets doet of zegt wat haar niet zint. Hierdoor raakt Twaalf dikwijls in de problemen wat haar vaker dan haar lief is een bezoekje aan de stamoudsten oplevert. Deze stamoudsten worden kort geïntroduceerd, maar er wordt niet te diep op hen en de bijbehorende stammen ingegaan. Al snel leer je Twaalf van een andere kant kennen. Ze moet voor straf een nacht in de kerkers doorbrengen en tijdens deze straf wordt het fort aangevallen. Als Twaalf erachter komt dat medeleerling Zeven is ontvoerd aarzelt ze geen seconde, ze wil haar meteen zoeken. Het karakter van Twaalf is vrij complex: het ene moment is ze boos en vecht ze, het volgende moment is ze zorgzaam en durft ze zich meer open te stellen. Fowler heeft deze beide kanten van het personage goed weer weten te geven waardoor Twaalf echt aanvoelt.
Naast Twaalf spelen er nog meer personages en wezens een rol in het verhaal. Deze zijn eveneens goed uitgewerkt en krijgen verschillende karaktereigenschappen mee. Dit is kenmerkend voor een jeugdboek. Er zitten verschillende personages in het verhaal met zo hun eigen karaktereigenschappen. Deze karaktereigenschappen zijn op een zodanige manier uitgewerkt dat andere personages hier belangrijke lessen uit trekken. Zo moeten ze elkaar leren accepteren en leert Twaalf dat er veel meer is dan de stammen waartoe haar medeleerlingen behoorden. Een nummer en een stam zeggen niets, het gaat om de persoon die je wilt zijn. “Wees wie je wilt zijn” is een van de belangrijkste lessen die Twaalf heeft geleerd en die haar verder brengen. Tijdens het lezen kom je erachter dat ze deze wijze les al vroeg heeft geleerd. Door middel van flashbacks neemt de auteur je mee naar het verleden van Twaalf. Hierin wordt duidelijk wat er is gebeurd waardoor ze zich bij de jagers heeft aangesloten. Deze flashbacks zorgen ervoor dat je verder wilt blijven lezen omdat je de puzzel wilt kunnen leggen.
De wereld waarin het verhaal zich afspeelt is rijk aan aspecten die dit tot een avontuur voor jong en oud maken. Het bevat enge wezens die de plannen van de personages dwarsbomen. Hier moeten ze mee om leren gaan. Ook zit er magie in het verhaal waardoor het spannend blijft. Niets is immers wat het lijkt. De goed uitgewerkte personages en deze rijke wereld vormen de ingrediënten voor een avontuurlijke reis.

Before even reading, I knew this would be a book I would like, but I didn’t expect to love it as much as I did. Everything from the magical world-building and many plot twists to the remarkable adventure these characters embark on filled me with pure excitement. I ended up reading it in one sitting because I was instantly hooked from page one. This is definitely an epic middle-grade fantasy you don’t want to miss!
The adventure that Twelve, Five, Six and the lodge guardian, Dog, go on to save Seven truly is an amazing one. Not only are there plenty of intense battles with frightening magical creatures to keep it exciting but there’s also inspirational moments between the characters that keep you fully invested. It’s hard not to be fascinated by this entire story because the author has created such an interesting and vivid world, that is so easy to imagine. Everything is described in so much detail you can easily get a feel for the sense of community at the Hunters Lodge and how frightening and creepy the monsters are that lurk about.
There are plenty of twists in the book that really shocked me as I didn’t see them coming. The whole story is incredibly well written and fast-paced so it really is impossible to put down until you’ve finished.
The characters were really a huge part of why I loved this book so much. Twelve is such a fierce and brave character, that you can’t help but love her. Her passion to be the best is so contagious and shown in everything she does. Whether that be killing it with her axes or arguing with Five. It was so great to learn so much about her and grow into the person she wants to be. I can’t forget her adorable companion squirrel, Widge. He is just the cutest addition and I love how much he meant to Twelve.
Dog, Five and Six also play a big part in the book and I loved them just as much. Five being the cocky, stubborn one is always butting heads with Twelve. I really didn’t like him at first but he really grew on me as we get to see more of his character and I ended up loving the quirky banter he brought to the team. Six on the other hand I adored from the beginning because of the sweet charm that he carries throughout the book. And Dog, you can tell at first he is just tolerating them all but he is so adamant to protect them. I love how we get to see them overcome all of these deadly challenges as well as bringing humour and meaningful moments about friendship to the story.
Overall, Fireborn is an epic tale full of intense action, gruesome monsters and magic. I loved every minute of this action-packed, adventure and can’t wait to jump back into the magical world of Ember if there is a sequel. There is just so much that happens that I don’t want to spoil, you will just have to read it! If you are a fan of fast-paced middle-grade fantasies this is definitely for you.

This was such a fun middle-grade fantasy to read! I was fully transported into the magical world of Ember that is crawling with monsters, magic, and mystery.
I loved the character of Twelve so much, she was strong and resilient but also flawed which is something that I absolutely loved becasue we got to see her change and learn from her mistakes and her flaws throughout the course of the book. Five, Six, and Dog made up a great team with Twelve, and seeing them all interact was so fun and interesting, especially as certain things got revealed and their growing friendship was tested. I also loved the monsters and the goblins becasue they were written very well and were suitably evil, which means that they posed a great challenge to Twelve and the hunters. And Victory, I have so many spoilery thoughts so I won't share them here!
The plot was so brilliant becasue it was fast-paced and well written becasue I was engaged throughout the entire book and wanted to keep reading to find out what was going to happen! The different stages of the book were split up brilliantly and it flowed so well for the reader. And the ending was so incredible and tension-filled, which meant that all the reveals and everything that went down had me on the edge of my seat. It was just so much fun to read and I hope that there is a sequel coming soon because I desperately want to know what is going to happen to the Hunters and Twelve after the events of this book.
Aisling Fowler is a wonderufl writer. She created such a rich world filled with so many interesting things as well as a whole host of possibilities for future books! I adored her characters and just all of it! Pick this up if you are a fan of epic middle-grade fantasies such as Percy Jackson becasue I think that this world holds the possibility to reach those heights.

Fireborn: Twelve and the Frozen Forest could be the start of something magical. I haven't felt this excited about a new children's fantasy series in some time. The world building is wonderful, and the story fast-paced yet still filled with interesting characters. It has strong Wizard of Once vibes, but feels darker than the usual pre-teen fantasy and I hope, as with Potter, the content ages alongside the characters over future books.

I enjoyed this book greatly and entered this world with an open mind.
I was a little apprehensive due to it reminding me of other YA fictions but looking past that it's a great read with brilliant twists and character development.
Looking forward to following the rest of the series.

I feel this series has a LOT of potential. The story is a bit slow and the characters didn’t get a lot of dept until the end, but I love the magic and creatures. I’m down for the second book!
