I knew I would like this one, but I didn't expect the ending to make me cry! THE NERVE!

Rep: AI MC, genderfluid alien side character, various alien races, queer-normative world.

CWs: Animal death (killing/eating of wild dogs), blood, child abuse, confinement (to spaceship/human shaped body), cursing, death, abandonment, medical content, mild violence.

The wayfarer's series is almost certainly my favorite series of all time (I'm currently in the midst of a slow reread to work my way to the fourth book), and while I love the first book wholeheartedly and find the third to be wonderful and inspiring, this one connects to me on a personal level more than most books I've ever read. While I don't know if the neurodivergent coding of the main AI character, Sidra, is intentional, as an autistic person I found myself relating to her quite possibly more than any other character I've seen in media. There's so much more I can say but... I don't have the words nor the space to say it.

This one, in contrast to the first, was more plot focused and complicated. The last chapter made me cry, and it's still the Wayfarers even though it's not on the Wayfarer

I think it's hard for sequels to live up to the premise of the first novel, but A Closed and Common Orbit just blew The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet out of the water for me. And that is saying something because I liked that book quite a lot. It's a book about personhood and family and battling the abusive systems that make us with the power of community and the family that we choose. It's about tackling our biases about ourselves and others. It's about healing from the grief that comes when your life gets radically changed in a way beyond your control (I read Sidra's struggle to adapt to being in a body very analogous to learning to adapt to my own disabilities) that disconnects you from your body and personhood. And it's just a book with empathy and kindness at its core. A beautiful read.

Just when I didn't think the Wayfarer could get any better... From what I've seen this book is a bit divisive in so far as some prefer the first over this and vice versa. I am in the latter camp. I loved this one. The shrinking of the cast from 5-6 characters to just 2 was more my speed. I liked the deeper dive. I loved how these two characters were woven together. Their stories were perfectly complementary. Chambers has an amazing ability to write painful and emotional stories that are ultimately uplifting and hopeful. This is such a hard balance to strike as it could easy tip into cheesy. It is a very thought-provoking novel as well, delving into what it means to be human, into nature versus nurture, etc. If you like found family stories this and so far all Wayfarer books fit the bill.
