What a fun book!! I really enjoyed this one! It's a sapphic selkie x vampire romantasy, what's not to like?
(There's a little, but it was mostly a lot of fun.)
I thought Maeve and Lizzie were fantastic foils. Maeve is the peaceable, compassionate, optimistic one, and Lizzie is the violent, selfish, cynical one. They really balance each other out. They were also both selfless in their own ways, which was such a sweet twist, especially with Lizzie. Their love for each other anchored them to each other, allowed them to help each other through their flaws. Delicious.
There were a few things I wished were different.Maeve's ex, Bronagh, who stole her coat, ended up being very shallow. I was hoping for some nuance, but he was very stereotypical, monologuing about how "did you really think I loved you," blah blah blah. I also wished that Lizzie's conflict with her mother had been properly resolved, given that it was the reason for her (version of) selflessness, and the whole reason she'd journeyed to Threshold.
That said, I thought this was a lot of fun! It's romance, it's fantasy, it's adventure. Lighthearted and sweet. One of KR's better books in my opinion. (Seriously, they need to do queer romances more often.)

Pirate fantasy romance book 2, this time Sapphic. I think an improvement over the first but I still want more world exploration. Lots of 🌶🌶🌶

......hard to say how I feel about this one. Loved the love interests. Thought it was too repetitive and drawn out and way to focused on that instead of any of the actual story line. Which I get cuz lizzie isn't about the cause. But I find myself more interested in the overall theme vs the struggles of love....

I think I wanted more of the rebellion. I think that's what was missing. Maybe higher stakes? More tension? I don't know. At the end of the day, this is Katee Robert and I love their books and even a meh book is still great. And of course getting to revisit a character from a different series (hi there Lizzie, say hi to Wolf and the others for me) is always a blast. Oh! Maybe this didn't fully vibe for me because I'm not the biggest grumpy/sunshine fan. Anyway, I'll still be getting the next book in the series.
Reasons to read:
-sexy badass vampire protagonist
-sexy badass selkie protagonist
-excellent lesbian smut
-action, adventure, romance!
For real. This one’s the whole package.

I love a lesbian romance. I however definitely felt like the first book was stronger and for whatever reason had a much harder time connecting to either of the FMCs in this book. I do love seeing more than the usual fantasy characters though and Celtic mythology is one of my favorites so having a character from that lore was fun.
