Genre:
Romance, Spicy Romance, Paranormal Romance
Synopsis:
Lizzie has never had a problem getting what she wants. As a bloodline vampire, she usually just takes it. And right now, she wants her family heirlooms that were stolen from her, and a portal home.
When the boat she’s on rescues a selkie from captivity, Lizzie sees this as a great solution, the selkie will be her guide, and Lizzie will help her get her skin back.
But Maeve, the selkie’s skin was stolen, and getting it back is going to be dangerous. Will Lizzie’s skills and Maeve’s selkie strength be enough to get it back?
Thoughts:
This was a fun sequel that picked up where the last book ended. While I do think that this book would work as a standalone, I felt I got more out of it by reading it in order as we were introduced to some of the characters in the first book.
I do think that this series has more build up to the romance than most of the other Katee Robert books I’ve read, these are slower burn, but not incredibly slow to where it’s frustrating. I have listened to both books on audio, and for me that is my favorite way to enjoy this series.
The narrator has done a fantastic job bringing all the characters to life in an enjoyable way. The characters in this story were a lot of fun. I don’t think that they had a ton of depth necessarily, but it wasn’t a huge drawback as the story was compelling enough to make up for it.
I think that Katee Robert writes my favorite spice scenes, and this book did not disappoint in that regard.
I’m looking forward to the next chapter in this Crimson Sails series!

This was my 1st FF read, and my 6th Book by Katee Robert. It was a decent read, but as far as the spice, especially comparing to some of her other spicy scenes, it wasn’t bad, but lacking the depth of elaboration and details that she’s clearly very capable of producing. It’s also a more descriptive of the emotions they encounter and maybe that’s my area of can’t get into it. I like dark, spicy, and I’m not sure I personally know how to identify 70% of human emotions, so I tend to ignore them in real life, and would probably like to in a book too. I like the Vampire and her brute force desires, but….. she softens at times that make me crinkle my nose a little. I am not likely to seek out the 2nd in this series, unless several reviews tell me it’s dark and spicier, maybe more emotionless.

This series combines everything I love, pirates, vampires and magic. I can’t wait for the next book!!!
Honestly kinda bummed about this book because during the first third I thought I finally found a Katee Robert book that I was gonna give more than three stars. Sadly, that just didn't pan out. As with most Katee Robert books they just don't deliver on the relationship development for me. I've previously mentioned that I think that's largely because their characters don't feel fully formed to me. In the case of this book, Lizzie felt fully realized while Maeve was underdeveloped. I think that Lizzie may have been more well rounded because she was the antagonist of the last book and felt like she existed outside of a relationship. Maeve on the other hand had really no personality besides nice I guess. Like why is she in the rebellion, how does she interact with her friends and allies, what drew her to Lizzie? We only got one scene where Maeve and Lizzie weren't together, so the reader doesn't really get to see her not paired up. I think this is the downfall of most Katee Robert books for me. The characters just don't feel realized enough and as a result the relationship doesn't feel interesting or natural. The real bummer of this book is that it didn't even have much of the fun spicy scenes their other books have. I'll be interested to see everyone else's opinions when I meet with my romance book club at Charlie's Queer Books next month.
