Strong black female lead. Bree is so capable and it’s so refreshing to read about a female protagonist who is physically strong, respected, headstrong yet still has doubts. Bree’s reflections and questioning herself feels so real and is speaks to so many levels of societal racism, patriarchy and just being a real person. I like that Deonne explored Bree’s ruthlessness and selfishness, as these are traits we all have to a cetain extent, but how we entertain them is what’s important.
Slower paced book, but after reading through some other threads, I think I agree it was needed for Bree’s reflections and self work before the epic finale. She needed to be sure of herself and *choose* to be the hero. Not have it thrust or forced on her.
I continually love the depiction of positive community, friendship and affirmation. Nice job Deonne! I’d love to meet the people whose character traits inspired these magical and warmth filled characters.
Highlighted some quotes on the e-book which spoke to me during the book. My only critique is I wish book 4 was already out! Huge cliffhanger at the end.

I’m not the biggest fan of multi POV. Deonn does it well, but I don’t know how necessary it was.
